rear swap '51 chevy pickup
I want replace the original sealed driveshaft/rear with an open shaft/rear application. I'm putting a 350 engine / 350TH trans. in the truck, but I don't know what rear to put into it. If anyone could give me some insight on what rearend works best without heavy modifications to it, I would appreciate it greatly. The original rear width is about 51" from back plate to back plate. I'm looking for something with a 5-lug pattern and disc or drum brakes.

I am not positive but I seem to remember people tend to use 70-81 Camaro/Nova style 10 bolt rear ends. I don't know if it is a direct swap or if new brackets have to be welded on the rear end. Sorry I can't help more. I am sure there is someone on the board that has done this swap.

rear end under early truck
My 1950 GMC sets on a 1970 chevell rear end but took very little to make it work.

The Camaro/Nova (or the Buick, Olds, Pontiac) makes a good swap. It is 1/2" wider and the biggest job is cutting off and welding on spring perches. Several guys at the Stovebolt forum www.stovebolt.com have done this change.
