Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
I mentioned this mod in another thread so here it is. I'm not done yet, but I'll update this thread as I go...
I want to tuck more wheel but I don't want it to look like I just welded some trailer fenders to the inside of my front fenders. Though I've seen that done and finished off nicely, I want my inners to be "stock looking" to the casual observer. I also want to be able to use the stock hood hinges. Since I have a 68 clip that's going on Tubby I started work on those fenders. First I moved the arch (provision for inners) up 1" by sectioning the inner structure of the fenders as follows: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 And the other side: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 |
Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Here's what the outer part of the stock inners (area most likely to rub) look like on the sectioned fenders:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 ...and here's what will be there now: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 Comparison of old v. new: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190057586 |
Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
The plan is to make a few relief cuts in the stock inners allowing me to raise them enough to meet up with the new outer sections. I will have to get rid of the aft "peak" (two peaks per side on stock inners with bolts from the bottom). By doing so I'll gain a lot of room for the stock hinges, which may still need to be shaved a bit, but I should be able to use all 3 hinge bolts.
I'll figure out how/where to cut the existing inners by bolting these on and going from there. |

:phat: Simply Amazing :metal:

You are the man;)

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Your whole Burb project has been nothing short of fantastic. Great attention to the whole thing.

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Looks real good. gonna do the same thing to my 86. Why not weld the bottom too instead of bolting them up or are you?
|
Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Stole my idea... Looks good though

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
You are a ninja.

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Thanks guys. I am not welding these to the fenders because I'm welding them to the existing inners (after slight modification). That way the whole inner fender (new+old) will be one unit that bolts to the fenders like factory, just a little roomier. Don't worry I'll use nice hardware ;)

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
your a genesis frizzle fry no doubt about it:metal:

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
great write up so far.
that first piece of new metal for the inner... is that a trailer wheel well trimmed down? if so, what size did you get for that radius? |
Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
looking good, i plan on doing full tubs this winter, ill have to make a lil build page too, i cant wait to see the end result

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
'Preciate the comments. I did use a trailer fender there. I bought them from a site that I've lost the link to but the demensions match this: 355480 9" 32" 15.25" 1",90° BACK 16GA.

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Looks like one of the best inner fender jobs I've seen! Looks like it's going to turn out real clean.
|
Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Thanks guys! It should be pretty stealthy when done, and you can see how much extra tuckage it'll have.
I just ordered a 355480 9" x32"x15.25" for the other side and two 355700 13" x36"x20" for the rear from KMT. I'm really hoping they're not galvanized :o It might be a while before I can weld the new tub sections I made to the existing inners because I have to get the entire 68 clip ready to go before I can commit to changing the shape of the inners. But that's a high priority at this point! |
Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Got one side all welded up and smoothed out. Filled the extra holes while I was at it.

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
That’s very cool, but I would have done them differently.
I would have had you do them on my fenders instead of yours :) great job |
Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod
Thanks Jamis :)
Just got my order in from KMT Wow that was fast! I got one more 9"x32"15.25" (355480) for the front and two 13"x36"x20" (355700) for the rear. Check these babies out:metal: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190755519 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190755519 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190755519 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190755519 The rear tubs are different on Burbs v. Trucks as you can see. But they still curve in as you move up from the fender lip. I'll make the new tubs vertical there so I can gain some tire width. 13" trailer fenders will be perfect: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190755519 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190755519 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190755519 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1190755519 |
