Re: 1972 Jimmy Rear end Question

Is the any advantage using the 14 bolt 6 lug rear end with 9.5 ring gear .
Or is the 12 bolt just as strong?

Re: 1972 Jimmy Rear end Question

The 14 bolt sf is quite a bit stronger than the 12 bolt bolt. I currently have one in the rear of my Jimmy, but it is 8 lug. My intent was to do a FF 14, but the complete 3/4 ton Suburban with 4.10 gears for $300 was too good to pass up!

I used my plasma cutter to remove the perches and shock mounts and then cleaned the tubes up with a grinder before TIG welding all the brackets in place.

I built an alignment jig and re-used the 14 sf perches which are for a 3 1/2" axle tube rather than the 12 bolts 3" tube. I did not use the suburban shock mounts but the original 12 bolt ones, which keep the shocks much better protected and fit my existing shocks. My jig positioned the spring mounts and shock mounts simultaneously. I used a protractor to match pinion angle to the factory 12 bolt.
