Just doing new brakes, heater core, tranny flush and filter and rear lube as I do with any new vehicle I get... so I cracked the differentil conver on the Dana, and I get this... WOW!!!! thought I only read about this kind of thing....

like I ALWAYS say when ppl ask about gears.... drain the oil. It is even more neglected than brake fluid.

Yuck!That's why I always change the fluid in the differentials when I get one if I plan to drive it any,and also why I tell people when they want to know their gear ratio to pull the cover and get the numbers from the ring gear,and replace the oil!

Just make sure to add some more sawdust in there when you add the new gear-oil. That way, it will still purrrr..;)

I had some chocolate milk in mine one time...I decided I would not back down into the lake anymore to unload the Jetski. None the less, a couple month later, new carrier bearings.

Just Flush It All Out With Brake Cleaner. And Then Fill It Up With Lucas Oil. And Hope For The Best

I wouldn't bother with lucas... most of there products are snake oil anyways. I WOULD clean it up real good, I would consider pullin the axles too... but once I knew all the water and crap was gone... I'd go with a synthetic oil.

I am swapping motors this weekend in my '67 and drained the oil in the SM465, and at least a quart of water came out the bottom. It hadn't been driven with the water (I think it was stored somewhere where the roof leaked) so it was not mixed with the oil, but some nasty chunks came out. We took the top off and blew it out pretty good with brake cleaner - hopefully it's good to go.:D

Synthetic Oil Is Great Stuff, But You Will Find Using Synthetic In Old Gears Will Cause The Gears To Heat Up Quicker. Thats A Fact I Learned Working On And Around Gears In The Shop Where I Work.

Do the best you can to get the junk out, fill it with good gear oil, run it for 100 miles and drop it again. When you drop it the second time make sure the fluid is at operating temp so it will flow better and the contaminates will be suspended in the oil. Refill will good gear oil and keep your fingers crossed...

Let Me Explain It This Way, With All New Gears It Is A Wise Idea To Run Syn. But With Gears With Age And Miles On Them, The Strength In The Metal Has Weakened Over Time. So The Thicker The Oil The Less Heat It Builds. Lucas Works Well In Keeping The Gears Lubed And Keeping Down Heat For More Life

I just did mine on my 68 GMC and it still looked good. However, it only has 28K miles on it... :)
