Preventing Surface Rust while working
 

You guys oughta go over to paint and body now and again:D


Ok guys, I have my bed apart and I am welding up some holes. If this project is going to take a few months and my panels are going to be stored in a cold garage, how can I keep it from rusting? The weater may not get warm enough to get out the ole paint gun to shoot primer. (I dont want to spray in my garage open flame heat not good ventelation etc )

I dont like the Idea of spray can primer because I would just have to remove it when I get ready to shoot the real stuff.

Do I just let it rust then remove it? Seems like this would be the same effort as the spray bomb primer.

I have the same dilemma but decided the spray bomb is fine since it is pretty easy to remove and it lets me know when I have the body work about where I want it. I can never tell if it is just right until I have put a coat of something on there and a light to see the high and low spots.

I may go with spray bomb. Has any one tried this from eastwood:

There is a product called Rass o Nil. It is made for bare metal prep. It's a rust converter and bare steel prep. It covers the surface with a cloudy (dry) coating that prevents rust from forming. It also works like an ething compound to allow better paint adhesion. Only drawback is it cant be used with etching primer. Its compatable with all other primers. I have used it and its great. No sirface rust on bars metal over months

Rass0Nil changed its name to Picklex 20. Works great.

I used Permatex Rust Treatment (was called Extend) on my tail gate after it was sand blasted it has been sitting in garage for 4 months and has not rusted as yet. I live at the beach and every thing rusts here.

Picklex 20 sounds like a good Idea, but dont you have to spray it on? Which is what I wa tryin to avoid:D

I used the spray can primer on my bed last summer. I had to do all the body work(even painting) outside. i did not remove or use any other primer before painting. This truck is kept outside and the paint is in perfect condition. At hte link below there are pictures of this painting being done in my backyard. This was my first attempt at body work so I really dont know what i am talking about. LOL.
