Transfer Case Oil ?

Does the transfer case on an automatic truck take auto trans fluid or gear oil? I cannot remember.
Thanks,

gear oil. the t-case gets atf in it when the adapter seals go bad.

Although not ideal, would ATF still work in the transfer case?

GM started to spec ATF for the NP205 behind automatic trannies in later years. ATF will work just fine in a 205.
