Hydro assist steering
Anybody done this? If I have manual steering now, I need a full power setup even for the companies that rebuild em? The assist is run from the same power pump as the regular power steering? Does the ram get power through the power steering box? Couldn't you get get a power steering pump and run the ram right off that?

Re: Hydro assist steering
you need a orbital valve for full hydrolic stearing
edit: you can use your p/s pump off your motor |
Re: Hydro assist steering
on my jeep the ram gets power from ports on the steering box. If you ran the power right off the pump, youd have no way of metering the amount of fluid to the ram. thats why its ran off the box.

the orbital valve is what meters the fluid. Are we talking about two differnet set ups? |

Re: Hydro assist steering
I'm full hydro. pump to orbital valve/steering wheel down to the ram mounted on the axle housing. no steering box.

Re: Hydro assist steering
i thought about running full hydro, but i was afraid of the street manners, such as return to center. But its not like the death trap (jeeps nickname) is streetable anyways.

Re: Hydro assist steering
So best bet for mostly street driving is to swap to a power box and that would control the ram?

Re: Hydro assist steering
I think so. AGR and Power steering customs make good stuff

Good info and great products. I have the setup but I need to mount my ram still....too damn busy with life :mm: |
Re: Hydro assist steering
The early trucks have a spool valve on the tie rod that hooks to the steering box, like old mustangs, vettes, and early 60's gm cars. This way you keep the manual box and just add power assist. The ratio is still dead slow, 8 turns or so lock to lock.
