what did yall use for shocks with a 4 inch z on a 87 i am having trouble finding a shock that will fit with enough travel

Rancho has sum prett godd shocks thats what i used.. Rancho rs5000's or 9000's for even more travel

i am going to post a build thread when i am done i did the z in the front and a triangulated four link in back swapped motor to a lt1 should be close to finished this month i did find a cst shock that has a 10.5" collapsed and 18" extended which is 7.5" of travel and i think that will do it with out limiting my lift

Z-ing reallly has no effect on shock selection, it's more what else you've done, bags, A-arms, spindles that will answer that question. I moved my crossmember 5" instead of Z-ing, but same effect as a 5" Z. Running factory spindles and bags on factory arms. I bought factory shocks and moved the upper shock mount to compensate for the crossmember moving. The shock still has more travel than I can use for my set-up.

Explain to me why it would be any different? Assuming you move the upper shock mounting hole along with the Z like everyone else does, the relationship from upper mount in the frame to the lower mount on the lower A-arm doesn't change at all from stock. It's the other modifications to the suspension that cause you to use a different shock. air bags, lower springs, different control arms. These things are what change that shock mounting relationship.

My crossmember is 5" higher up in the frame than it was stock. Take a wild guess how far my upper shock mount had to be relocated... 5" exactly the same amount. My only mod to the suspesnion itself is changing it's location in the frame and airbags. Zing the frame does exactly the same thing. If the front suspension was totally stock and your only mod was to Z the frame, a stock shock will still work exactly like it did without a Z because the suspension itself hasn't changed, only it's relationshiop to the rest of the frame has and the shock mount moves with the Z so that relationship is unchanged.

ok i will explain

yes you move everything up 4" right behind where the stock shock goes so guess what that means if it is stock you need to move the shock mount up 4" there is only one problem with that when you Zed the frame up 4" now the shock mount is very close to the cab and the steering column and if the truck was stock that would be fine but i need a shock with 10" of travel and fit in that space

so because of the Z you are very limited on what length of shock you can run so you can see how Zing the frame has a huge effect on shock selection

You need a shock with 10" of travel??? I have contitech 2600s and a 3 inch drop spindle. I have done a 4 inch Z on my 65 it will have stock shocks with maybe the lower tabs cut off and replaced with a stud welded on instead.

If that doesnt help unbolt your upper studs and weld them higher up on the frame for a shock with 10" of travel.... have fun finding one of those that fit in there I am pretty sure there is only like 12 inches from my lower tabs to my upper stud

I use a lowered shock from ART, but my Z did not affect my shock mounting. I use a lowered shock becuase I have 3" spindles and bags. Maybe I am misunderstanding.

yeah im not understanding either because i have a 2 1/2 z but the stock shocks still let it lift up high enough..

Apparently I didn't understand all the parameters of what you where asking. So you need 10" of travel at the shock? An RE7 bag only has about 8" of total travel with no weight on it. You must have a really trick set-up if you've getting 10" at the shock. I'd love to see pics of that if you have them. That's a TON of travel.

I have a 3"Z and my shock mounts didn't change in relationship to each other. I need a shorter shock due to the bag placement in the control arm but I haven't picked one out yet.
