buying a 1/2 ton burban.... any tips?
hey all,
i have been wanting to buy a 67 burban for ever.... but i never find em' without needing serious work! i am looking at a 69 with a 67 front clip and 5 lug disc conversion done in the front, but the rear is still a 6 lug. i guess i can settle.. is the rear on a 69 1/2 2wd leaf or coil sprung? also, i know nothing about these burbs... i had a 74 454 burban but always wanted one of these:hmm: i will be going to see it on sunday. any tips to look out for? what is the rear bed made of? were they all plywood? where are the comon rust places to look for on a burban? are they very different from the trucks? thanks everyone!! i know i can count on you guys! |

i believe they are made of marine grade plywood and i also believe they all came with the wood floor but dont hold me to it. the common places to look for rust woud be around the top of the windshield, rockers, floor, and the bottom of the rear quarter panels. no they are very simular to the trucks. and good luck with your potential buy.:metal: |

not that i know of. i believe that you can buy it through catalogues like lmc, etc. i dont know about the roof racks though, maybe someone else can chime in and give you an answer on that one. |
Re: buying a 1/2 ton burban.... any tips?
The burbs rust pretty much in the same place as the trucks do, rockers, kick panels, heater boxes....
If it's a 2WD, it should be coil springs. Roof racks are hard to come by, but they are out there (usually not cheap if in good shape). I'm redoing a 69 and I have a 70 GMC suburban with factory big block for sale. Check out my links in my signature... Good luck. |
Re: buying a 1/2 ton burban.... any tips?
The rear gates are usually rusted and are not reproduced.
All the roof racks were dealer installed options. So you can sometimes find them on other vehicles. I've seen the one I have (or very similar) on Blazers and Jeep Wagoneers. http://z.about.com/d/trucks/1/0/T/V/63_wagoneer.jpg |
Re: buying a 1/2 ton burban.... any tips?
if a clamshell, the upper hatch rots out from the inside out. Lift and shake to listen for rust crumbs.
My burb is from the soggy PNW, and this one leaks water into the vehicle from all the common places, and the wooden floor in back is all still in great shape, so it *shouldn't* be an issue in Cali. 67/68 trim... if you are talking the lower side moulding, will be pretty much impossible to locate. While the doors and fenders will be the same as the trucks... the rest will be VERY hard to locate. |

any other suggestions? |
Re: buying a 1/2 ton burban.... any tips?
Look for rust in the rear floor pan kick-up under the second row seat. The rear tires can throw mud at the back side of that area.
Rear drip rails, if rusted, have to be custom made with a shrinker/stretcher to replace. They can also rust around the back of the wood floor and where the rear wheel wells seal to the floor. Good luck and post pics weather you buy it or not! |
Re: buying a 1/2 ton burban.... any tips?
i definately will!
i am 95% sure i will buy it. its only 1300 so i figure as a running project, i can't go wrong unless it has horrible rust issues. thanks again!!! eric |
