i need muffler help!!
ok i need help picking out mufflers for my truck. i know its not a big deal but its all about the sound!! i have a 350 sbc with a th400 that i am putting a set of long tube flowtech headers on and am going to run true duals back. i want a good sound but it will be a daily driver so i dont want loud! :waah: i am thinking of dumping them in front of the rear tires but if you guys think that will be to loud then i will go out the back. thanks for the help!
oh one more questing should i run an h pipe? do they really help with power? |
Re: i need muffler help!!
Use real long glasspacks with pipes no larger then 2 1/4 in. I don't like H or X pipes. They don't sound as good. Go out behind the rear wheels or under the rear bumper.

Re: i need muffler help!!
Some board member, (I don't remember who), had these: http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...=KeywordSearch
He had a link to a video of his truck running, sounded like Flowmasters... |
Re: i need muffler help!!
I run Dynomax Race Magnums with an X-pipe dumped behind the rear axle.I have 3" mandrel bent tubing. It's got a nice sound and the race magnums seem to make good power.I've got a 406 roller motor thats pretty healthy also. This exhaust in 2.5" or 2.25" would work well. It's really not too loud, unless you stand on it.Good kuck:chevy:

Re: i need muffler help!!
I'm going to suggest long glasspacks as well.
I have 26" cherrybombs, with 2" in/out on my truck, with a 307. It goes headers, glasspacks, then pipes out in front of the rear tire. I like the sound, it's not *real* loud, and talks when you get on it. I've been told it's "distinctive", so apparently people don't dig glasspacks much anymore. -shrug-. Just my 2 cents. I have some sound clips if you'd like an example, just lemme know. -Sam. |
Re: i need muffler help!!
X-Pipe + Dual Flowmaster super 44's = Nicest sound i have ever heard.
just my 2 cents |
Re: i need muffler help!!
thanks for all the info keep it coming! if anyone has sounds clips let me know that would be great!

As requested.
at idle. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...SCI0005-25.jpg in the cab. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...SCI0001-44.jpg drive by. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...SCI0014-10.jpg and of course, screwing around, and smokin' the tires. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...SCI0001-46.jpg hope that helps some. -Sam. |
Re: i need muffler help!!
check out the dynomax site. you can change mufflers with their online tool and hear the different sound.

Re: i need muffler help!!
Sorry I don't have any sound clips of mine (it's not running atm), but I have 40 series Flows dumped right in front of the rear axle. IMO, if you're gonna do a lot of driving in it, don't use the 40's or dump it. I think it sounds awesome, but I get lots of in-cab resonance. Gotta raise your voice to talk, and forget about using your cell phone! (probably shouldn't do that anyway :) If I had dynomat or similar, it probably wouldn't be as bad. When I finally get her back on the road, I'm probably at least going to reroute to in front of the back tires and out to the sides.... Just my .02!

Re: i need muffler help!!
i'm running dynomax ultra flo's.ram horn's, 2 1/4" pipe,h-pipe,dumped at rear bumper. nice sound running through the gears and when getting on it pretty good. just a noticble rumble at cruising speed. removing the h-pipe will make it louder.i just wanted something different, everbody has flowmasters.

Re: i need muffler help!!
I have the same dilemma... I have had 36" glasspack blanks for many years and they need replacing. I liked them a lot, they sounded great and not noisy at all -- just a nice mellow V8 burble. But they were Walkers, and Walker is out of business, so I don't know what to get. Virtually all my driving is short trips and the exhaust never gets hot enough, so moisture is a big problem for me. For that reason, mine dump just behind the mufflers, ahead of the rear axle.
Edit: Ack!! Just Googled Walker, they are alive & well.. so my old blanks were another brand and I cannot recall what. Oh well... |
Re: i need muffler help!!
I have dumped 40 series Flowmasters on my truck and it sounds awesome, but I too agree on not running them that way if you drive it a lot. It would get annoying quick, but it was great when I was in high school. I don't like glasspacks that much as they are kind of cackly, especially with shorter ones, but long glasspacks sound quite a bit mellower.
Sound clip of my truck: 350 with headers and 2.5" pipe, and the mufflers just end, no turndowns or anything...underneath the bed |
Re: i need muffler help!!
350 mild cam flow tech headers flowmaster 2 chambers ran out the back 2.5 in pipe all the way.. nuthn really at all in the cab less you stomp it!!

Re: i need muffler help!!
hello i have an x pipe on my truck and flowmaster 40's. they come out in front of rear wheels it sounds good but kinda noisy in cab . putting it out the back should be great sound not 2 loud and i believe with the x pipe it makes it a little less noisy.

Re: i need muffler help!!
I've got a 350 w/ a np a833 tranny.
Using Flowmaster 40's, headers, 2.25" pipes out infront of the tires. It's my daily driver sounds good when i need it to and quiet when i travel. |
Re: i need muffler help!!
I have 2.5" pipes with Flowmaster Super 40's. I love the way mine sounds, but if I were driving it everyday, it would get on my nerves. I suggest some Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flows. I had these on my 86. They sound great. Nice and mellow at idle and cruise, but still make enough noise when you get on it. Here's some videos.
My 68 with the Super 40's. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...tstruck002.jpg My brother's truck with original 40's. Too loud IMO. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...tstruck001.jpg My dad's MC SS with Delta Flow 40's and his ElCamino with Delta Flow 40's. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...th_Cars239.jpg http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...th_Cars241.jpg Here's a link to my 86 with the 50 series Flows. http://videos.streetfire.net/video/H...Flow_60865.htm |
Re: i need muffler help!!
I myself(no offense to ANYONE!) cannot stand the soound of glasspacks. They remind me of a clapped-out old ford. But to each his own.
I like the Flowmaster 50's,super 40's,and the Dynomax race Magnums. Hooker AeroChambers sound very nice also. Good Luck. -Lance |
Re: i need muffler help!!
I have long tube headers that flow back to the x pipe which is right under the cab and it flows back to flowmaster series 40's which are located under the bed and the pipes dump behind the rear wheel, I use mine a daily driver, well on the nice days and I love it. The cab noise is not bad at all and it does sound good as youd rive it down the road. I would recomend that set up, it will work nice for you.

Re: i need muffler help!!
does anybody have any opinions of edelbrock mufflers?
I have glasspacks now that need replacing and i want something quieter. Flowmasters and Dynomax are too loud...or i've grown too old. |
Re: i need muffler help!!
Put the muffler as far back as possible then the drone or resonance isn't bad. I only run flows, I have an old set (over 20 years now!) on my 70 camaro and I have a couple of sets on the BBC 454 SS truck and another new set for my 2wd Blazer. Again the 40's or 44's are loud, but the 50's and up are mellower. I HATE GLASSPACKS!! The rednecks around here think that crackle snap pop is so coll, but well you know! Borla, Flows, dynomax, etc are better than a glass pack. BTW X or H pipe is more about equalling out the exhaust pulses from DS and PS banks on the motor which can create a bit of power as well, X pipe really helps scavenging, and all the way out back otherwise anything will be loud. I ran 3" 2 chambers off of a BBC that ended before the rear, it was crazy!! I loved it, but some thought it was loud.

I was going to ask this same question. I have an Edelbrock muffler on my motorcycle and I like the sound, but it's an apples to broccoli comparison between a bike and a truck... (If you're scratching your head about the Edelbrock on a bike...It is a custom exhaust made by Latus HD for Buell. From what I know, they took an Edelbrock muffler and modified it to fit on a Buell XB. Loud and torquey.) |
Re: i need muffler help!!
I don't have any experience with the, but I've heard really good things about Thursh turbo and welded mufflers (not to mention their glass and steel packs).
Jakes68GMC has Thursh turbo's on his truck, if I remember right. Maybe he'll chime in, but I know he's gotten some compliments on the sound of his truck. snap, crackle, pop. ;) -Sam. |
