Dana 44 Outer Axle Seal
2 Attachment(s)
Is it just me or does the 'Seals it' seal look like the 'Mad' one? I know the Seals it one is made for the inner end, but. Haven't checked my axle sizes yet. What do you think?

Re: Dana 44 Outer Axle Seal
Wow! I`ve never seen these. What a great idea.I was going to ask if you meant front axle or rear, but the text supports that it`s the front. Is it designed to add support as well as sealing? To me,that is what I feel would be most beneficial.Supporying the inner axles from the opposite side of the u-joint at the outter stub/splindle is a weak design,IMO.
It could very well be the Mad 4x4 part.Summit is just a mass-marketing company, not a manufacturer. What they sell under their own brand name is made by someone else without their name so they can undersell the manufacturer who sells in more limited quantity and limited line of product. When I can afford it,I like to buy from the little guy.Like the one that stuck their neck out and concieved/developed the product.I also like the better info offered by the independants.Summit just put`s it up there and says,"Here it is,buy it".Sure, they have great customer service and after the fact they will make it right if you got the wrong thing or it wasn`t what you expected. To me,that`s a hassle still. |
Re: Dana 44 Outer Axle Seal
I was thinking about these too. But i need alot of stuff. Where do you stop?
My inner axle seals leak now, and i just didn't feel like pullin the chunk to fix it. These would help the problem, but for now i just keep it toped off. |
Re: Dana 44 Outer Axle Seal
The "concept" is fine, but in practical application, I just do see it.
The inside of the axle tube will be rusty/crusty as well as the axle shaft itself. There is no good sealing or bearing surface here. It seems like a "band-aid" for leaking inner seals that will not last either. It would be a considerable amount of work to get those in place. In fact the only thing lacking would be to take off the cover, drop the carrier, and the inners could be replaced too. While I would agree that a bearing out near the joint could be a good thing, they have existed a long time w/o one. |
Re: Dana 44 Outer Axle Seal
I see what you are saying Longhair. My diff will be apart, have to put new inner seals in anyway. As well as U joints etc etc. The truck is a keeper so I just wondered while I had the opportunity...... trying not to over think it!
I put you wrong on the Summit link. Should have put this up...http://www.sealsit.com/lowcostaxleseal.asp |
Re: Dana 44 Outer Axle Seal
It is still a seal that is too far from a bearing and on a shaft that does not have a place for it to ride. It's your $ and your choice, but I wouldn't, especially since you are replacing the inners anyway.
