Rear End Question

I am looking at buying a 1985 1/2 ton GMC Suburban and will be parting it out cause it was taken off the road as unroadworthy cause of the rust. My question is depending on what rear end it has and I'm assuming it will have a 10 bolt with 3:08's unless I get real lucky ( I should check my horoscope) and find a 3:42 posi, other than having to attach (weld) the trailing arm saddles to the rear end, will it go into my 72? I guess what I need to know is it the same length as the original in my 72.

Other than having to weld the saddlles for the trailing arms on the Burb rear end, is it the same length as the original one in my 72 and will it just bolt in?

same length. It'll bolt on after you weld on the mounting pads. Also will need a panhard bar mount on the pumpkin.

Thanks for the info. I forgot about the panhard bar. Where would I get a panhard bar mount and how does it attach?

Re: Rear End Question

The stud for the panhard bar is a part of the rear end (pumpkin housing). You may try calling ECE and see if the have a bracket for a stock set up or ECE also has a Super Track Bar for $109.00 and it goes from the D/S Frame to the P/S trailing arm. Good Luck, Harry

Thanks Harry. I was planning on putting a Super Track bar on my truck when I lowered it if I did that when I switched rear ends that would kill 2 birds with one stone.

I am 99% sure it is. Take a tape measure and double check it that's the main reason you are buying it.

Re: Rear End Question

Thanks for the advice. I also put a message on the 67/72 board and was told it will bolt in but I will check the measurement first. I was also told I will need to do something with the panhard bar cause the Burb rear end doesn't have the stud for the panhard bar to attach. I really didn't want to go this route ( using a used rearend ) but with cost of gas going the way it is ,its either try to get a little better mileage or sell the truck and I RRREEEAAALLLYYY do not want to do that.

Greg, I have 6 inch drop coils and a Super Track Bar and what a nice setup. I changed my entire rear end out including leafs for trailing arms, 6 lugs to 5 lug and had to add various brackets to accomodate the changes. Lots of hard work but well worth it. Good Luck with your project.

I'll let you know how I make out. I really didnt want to put a used rear end in my truck but I got to try and get some reasonable gas mileage. I know your gas is nearing 4.00 a gallon but if take the US/Canadian dollar exchhnge rate and allow that our imperial gallon is 20 % bigger than yours we are still paying 5.00 per gallon right now. That 700R4 I've been thinking about is looking better all the time too.

Sorry about that. I have never read the rules of the Board and have always used common sense when I'm on here. This particular rule makes no sense to me but I will abide by it. Sorry if I offended the powers to be !!!

Re: Rear End Question

The point of the rule is to keep all of the relevant information in one place. It is far easier figure out the results from a "search". It is also less confusing to people that are trying to help you with your question. The "flow" is interrupted and sometimes the information posted in multiple-post threads is conflicting, which adds to confusion.

You had to agree to the rules when you signed up, plus they are "sticky-ed" at the top of every forum.
