Greetings folks. I was wondering if someone can post a diagram the rear drum brake assembly for a 72 with a GM 12 bolt rear end. Thanks Mister E:chevy:

man that pic looks all to familar!!! i just re done my brakes this weekend, that e-brake cable is a pain, and if yr mech challenged as i am leave the other side alone until ya get the opposite side complete. i wore a path in the cement walking around lol, good luck and use jack stands for yr saftey

see the shiny arm on the rear of his pic? right behinde the adjuster? thats where your e brake cable attaches not to the shiny arm but the arm right behinde it

Can the ebrake cable be installed "later on"? I'm considering ordering one of those stainless ones from Inline.

umm i dont think so, well i guess you would have to take your brakes back off when your ready to install yr new ones, but that will be a snap after you do this once it wont take long, are you gonna go ahead and replace your wheel cylinders while your at it, there only like 10 bucks each.

The shoes are on backwards. The short lined shoe is the primary and goes to the front.

Mr E, can you take a picture of the brackets you have there. I recently did this same install this past weekend (1st time I might add) but failed to get a shot from the bottom side of the brake system. If you can post a picture of the brackets I think we could walk you through it in a snap.

As far as adding the e-brake after the drums are together, I think you are our of luck, unless you have extra small hands.

I am about to build the rear brakes on a 67 gmc c2500 3/4 ton. The rear brakes, nor emergency brake cables etc... do not exist on the truck so this thread has been very helpful. Thank you so much for posting the link to the "Brake Drum Assembly How to" it is for a 6 bolt hub but the setup is the same as the 8 bolt floating hub from what I can tell.

I was just getting ready to ask that ?. The short brake shoe faces the front on both the rear and front correct.

Can anyone get a photo of a 3/4 ton axle please. I can't seem to figure out why I mixed up the two brake struts and now I cant remember where they go besides at the top in between the brake shoes and under the wheel cylinders.

the truck is facing right in the photo. This is a picture of the right side of the truck. See the emergency brake cable?
I screwed it up first because I was working on the drivers side and didn't think about the fact this pic could have been of the passenger side.

Does anyone know if all truck 12-bolts use the same shoes and such?
For example; does 63-72 all interchange or does the 73+ 12-bolt also interchange with the earlier 12-bolts?

I found this thread that 10-bolt and 12-bolt interchange, but I still haven't found an answer to my question above.

I,am 99% sure all 12 bolt truck shoes are the same but I do know there are 2 different shoes and drums, 1 is h/d brakes other is std brakes.

Lostmy65, also researching 12 bolt drum brake options, thinking of changing my 65 rear brakes to the newer 12 bolt heavy duty "JB 5" brake package. Just starting to see if it will work. Looks like the backing plates are different from earlier ones, offset to the center of truck to account for the wider brakes shoes. As notes here before by Keith Seymore, this is one of GM's really good brake systems, used as a design goal for trucks.

Any information/can it be done, on retrofitting rear JB 5 brakes to the early 12 bolt 2" brake shoe axles?

Note: using '79 Dana 44 front axle, with the JB 5 brakes. I am planning to use the complete JB 5 brake system on '64 K10 build. Keeping all the original '64 parts so they could be retorfit later.

I have a 67 C-20 that im currently in the process of doing the rear shoes, pain in the butt, have not been done in id say 30 years, axles have to come off to remove hub and drum, pain in the butt, should have bought new wheel cylinders, went with rebuild kit, got one done, pain in the butt, lol, drums were surprisingly ok, but will replace oil seals and repack bearings did i mention its a pain in the butt.

I took my 70 front off late last fall put reassembly on hold for the winter then just as I was going to finish my tractor ran over my leg....... anyway time to finish em now and if it wasn't for this thread I don't know what I,d do................... thanks guys
