What is needed to swap a SM465 in place of a 3 sp??
What is involved in putting a SM465 in a '67 K10 4X4 that has a 3OTT? I don't have the truck here to look at, and I don't know all the specifics except that it is a factory K10 with the original 327 and 3 sp. I don't know what transfer case it has, but it supposed to be stock.

You we be better off using a 465/205 that is already mated together. That way you have the bell housing, trans, xfer case and adapter that are meant for each other. Then you would need the clutch pedal and the neccesary shifters. The drive shaft length would need to be checked too.

Would a '67 K10 with a 4 speed came with the T221?

So what would be needed to just replace the 3sp with a SM465? I don't think a transfer case change is anything the owner wants to do.

I am sure the input shaft is different.

My shortbed is a 3spd/NP205 and I`m making it a 4spd.Although I already have a nP205 I bought a complete changeover. The length of the input and spline count(maybe?)are different. The adaptor that mounts between is different. You can get this set-up for between $200-$300.It`s the best way to go.

Re: What is needed to swap a SM465 in place of a 3 sp??
Now wait a minute, your saying you can just replace the 3 on the tree with an SM465 - when I did it I had to swap in a bbc along with it's SM465 to get rid of the 3 on the tree  I had no idea I could just have replaced the tranny without replacing the motor.
Seriously though, when I was looking into this swap I heard from a few people that the bellhousing for the three on the tree tranny was different and I would need a different bellhousing. I did end up swapping engines so I never had to figure out if that issue was correct. Just something for you to keep in mind, a different bellhousing may be needed. Gotta say I agree with the above advice to go ahead and update to an SM465/NP205 combo - in retrospect I wish I would have done that when I swapped in the SM465 in my 69 K20 - I'm presently replacing the Rockwell T221 for an NP205 as we speak. |

I going for "nostalgia points" and keeping my T221...
actually i'm just to cheap to upgrade! |
Re: What is needed to swap a SM465 in place of a 3 sp??
I`ll see what the difference is between a 3spd bellhousing and a 4spd one.Does anyone know for a fact they are different.

Re: What is needed to swap a SM465 in place of a 3 sp??
3 speed synchronized tranny has the same bellhousing as a SM465... my K20 has a 3 speed bellhousing on it (long story)
however, the pre 69ish unsynchronized 3 speeds (little short thing, i can try to get pics) has a different bellhousing. the bottem two bolts are wider, not in line with the top ones. also, a SM420 uses a different bellhousing than a SM465... the input bearing retainer is smaller on a SM420 |
Re: What is needed to swap a SM465 in place of a 3 sp??
Yeah,I was thinking about this and I`m sure GM made all the differences in the adaptors. The driveshafts are the same and the t-case/crossmember are in the same place with all transmissions.

Re: What is needed to swap a SM465 in place of a 3 sp??
My 69 K20's Rockwell tc crossmember is not in the same location as my 70 K5's tc crossmember that was originally for a Dana 20 tc. I just went and measured and my 69 K20's crossmember sits 2 1/2" closer to the front cab body mount than my 70 K5's crossmember.
