86 steering box?
 

will an 86 power steering box work on my 64. i was told on here that the steering column wouldn't so will the box easily hook up to another column?

You need this kit. http://www.classicparts.com/1960-66-...ctinfo/76-979/ It makes it alot easier to install the box. You do have to shorten the steering column. I put in a tilt from a van and now have a split shaft. The lower shaft is from a 70's truck. Just cut the factory end off and used a DD adn 36 spline u joint.

if your gonna use the 86 box, why not just go ahead and use the 86 column?
Then you won't have to worry about cutting shafts and using u-joints. Just collapse the 86 column by drilling out the two plastic retainers and move to the desired length. The hardest part about the newer column is modifying the column/bracket under the dash. All it takes is knocking off the 3 or 4 weld-nuts and moving them to match the holes on your factory bracket.

Even if the shifter is on the floor it would have to be a stick shift but the ignition is on the column as well, which you don't want.

is $150 a good deal on a '86 power steering box and tilt column?

You should not have any problem with the steering box. They are a 605 box and fit from a variety of years. These pics are not a pretty way but it is an easy way. Every thing is a bolt up on the shaft. Use a collapsible intermediate shaft. Use the rag joint off the 86.

Acually the steering box in my picture is from an 86 sub.. And I am using a van column without the key in the ignition. I was going to try and use an 88 column but it was hard to get the high beam switch rod to clear the bracket so I back to basics.

I can't quite understand what they're trying to say... but the column ignition shouldn't be that big of a deal. If you want to use the stock ignition, then just remove the ignition switch/rod, and if your worried about the column ignition itself, then just dremel off the plastic and fill where it was. (I just left mine... wasn't a big deal to me... I just took off the rod and switch)

The Van column dose not have the key in the column. I think they started that in 1981. No need for dremeling anything off or filling anything. That is what the difference is. No biggie.
