will it last another 5-10 years?
3 Attachment(s)
I see a lot of posts about roof sealer and problem caused by it. I never looked at seam sealer on my cab untill now. It's cracking bad but I am sure it was this way for a while. If I don't do anything about it do you guys think it will last maybe another 5 years or so?

I would get a garden hose and run some water on your drip rail to see if you get water inside the cab.It looks like some of the cracks could take in some water.Just my 2 cents.

it's only get water when I wash it, once in a while. No leaks inside.

Wow, yours is in good condition! Ours is barely left.

The only problem is rust between the top and roof. You wont see it until it comes through. I would consider some kind of temporary fix until you are ready to do the body work. If the truck doesnt sit out in the weather you are probably good for awhile.

Re: will it last another 5-10 years?
Why do you need it to last 5-10. That is pretty vague.

being that it rains in LA only once in a while, I doubt you'll have any poblems.

I bought a truck out of El Cajon and it had sun baked seam sealer there. It ended up with a rotted header panel inside. Why wouldn`t you just fix it?The sun belt trucks don`t rust like rust belt trucks and have lasted way better. But,your time is coming.Rustbelt trucks rust from the bottom up and yours will rust from the top down, just slower.I`d grind that out,get to clean metal, seal, prime, and paint with white paint. My truck from Modesto had totally cracked sealer, too.I fixed it before it made a bigger problem. We expect rust here and baby or trucks to make them last. You guys take it for granted because you`re unfamiliar with it.You may have a 50/50 chance of it not becoming a problem. But,I`d act on making it last forever. Why take a chance on letting another get too far gone?

At first I sought it was a bondo repair from the po. After reading here I know what it is. I am afraid if I touch the body it will turn in to a frame off restoration. Sometime next year I will get to it. Right now I am doing a motor upgrade with some suspension work.

I'd clean that stuff out and reseal it. If you don't get a perfect color match on the roof, it's not that visible. By the time you notice rust coming thru, you'll have some major repair to do.

Re: will it last another 5-10 years?
To hold our C20 till paint time, last year we masked it off about 3/4 inch from the edge and used some gloss white rustoleum and a brush to fill the cracks and seal it up until we can do it right. Looks good and no one has ever noticed the difference. Took 2 coats, one to seal and one to level it out.

Re: will it last another 5-10 years?
i would put a coat of white seam sealer on it till your ready to do the body work, that should last about 5 years

Re: will it last another 5-10 years?
i just used the standard drip or seam sealer in the regular calking gun. cost $8.00 to $10.00. use gloves to finger fit to my liking - let dry prime & paint pics http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...pwheels001.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...pwheels002.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...pwheels003.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...pwheels006.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...pwheels007.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...pwheels008.jpg

Re: will it last another 5-10 years?
why settle for 5 to 10 years? I am looking for another 40 for mine.

Re: will it last another 5-10 years?
Do you have to put a thick bead of sealer on the drip rail? like it was stock

Just shave the drip rail, and then you don't have to worry about it :D
