Houndstooth seat question.
I have a 72 custom deluxe, the seat is still wearing the original upholstery. It seems to be a rare color combo, it is white with the scroll pattern in the middle, and orange and white houndstooth. I cant find that combo anywhere, any ideas?

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
is it hounds tooth, or plaid?

that's not factory, i bet your truck is a highlander and should have the plaid like in the second pic. with the below eyeline mirrors, tilt, custom deluxe, and parchment interior, i bet it is. it should say highlander or special promotional on the glove box. if it is it should have orange plaid seat inserts. i attached some pics of mine and of a highlander brochure.

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
The reason everybody is questionong is because Houndstooth only came in the Cheyenne Supers.A Custom Deluxe would have Custom Cloth which is a lacey pattern polyester in a slid color matching the vinyl.Unless it`s a Highlander, which yours may be because they`re based on Custom Deluxes and would have Parchment vinyl.

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
That's odd. It does have the highlander package listed on the glovebox. But it was also a special order truck. I got it from the original owner he gave me a mountain of paper work, owners manuals, warranty card, maint. records, protect-o-plate etc. I have the special order number but no broadcast sheet. He swore that nothing had ever been changed exept the engine was rebuilt in 1984. I also have (but not currently in the truck) factory tach and vacuum gauge, am/fm push button radio and floor mats. Is it possible it was ordered like that, or does the old man have allzhiemers? If it does need the plaid seat, does any one make re-pop covers?
|
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
I vote allzhiemers, I have never heard of an orange houndstooth in trucks and and have never seen a houndstooth seat with a scroll pattern. I have never heard of a factory vac. guage in a regular truck.

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
I think the plaid material is available somewhere, but it is the scroll pattern that is not reproduced, but maybe yours is ok, someone will chime in. If you get a chance post a picof the option sticker I have never seen the vac guage listed on a truck.

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
yes, let me jump on the option band wagon here.
Does it say COPO anywhere on there on the SPID? |
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
I have no camera, the options on the SPID are as follows
1BX230 body side moulding 1B9210 door edge guards 1D6410 Below eye line mirrors 165010 Heavy rear springs 1LS910 350 eng 1N3310 comfortilt steering 1PA120 Deluxe wheel covers 1U6312 AM/FM pushbutton 14G820 Special promo pkg 126260 Custom Deluxe 16810 Highlander orange 1A1120 tinted glass 1B8530 belt moulding 1C6020 four seasons a/c 1F110 Front/rear shocks 1J7010 hydraulic brakes 1M4910 turbo hydramatic 1N4010 power steering 1UF210 cargo lamp 1U3720 front/rear chrome 125323 gauges ammeter, oil, rpm, temp vac 145810 white/red orange/white SP. Order# QQQ166 Does this tell us anything? |
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
I don`t recall ever seeing SP.Order# on the spid.Could this be a copo?I`ve never seen the gauges all grouped together in one option.
|
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
copo is normally typed out on the SPID.
I'll have to see if I can find that RPO 125323 ... doesn't even look like the right kind of code. mine (with no vac guage) is 1Z5320 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/data/500/x.jpg |
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
There is a bad spot on the spid right on the line between the numbers, if you can find the correct number I'd like to write it down.
|
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
without seeing it in any of my books, I would say that it should be 1Z5323 instead of 125323... since it is like one digit off a normal guage cluster.
|
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
Is there anyone you know with a camera that could take a picture of the SPID and email it to you so you can post it here? Good luck.

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
Is it possible since the scroll is correct for the highlander seat, that the inserts were replaced at some point? I realize that the original owner said it was correct but that would make it one in several hundred thousand as would the vac cluster. The tach should be a seperate option to its self not included in the cluster option. What are the first digits on the vin for the plant the truck was built in? Also does the wheel based match the truck- i.e 115 or 127 ? This just does not match up. Not doubting the COPO option but how many of these trucks actually rolled with the COPO option, unless they were some specialized fleet vehicle?
|
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
COPO isn't an option, and I would speculate that hundreds of thousands rolled out the COPO program... as fleet/specialty trucks... and ONLY as such.

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
no one reproduces the whole seat cover. sms auto fabrics has the plaid and they can even build the scroll, but not put together the whole cover. the vinyl they use to make the scroll is cheap vinyl and when they emboss the scroll it is not as deep as the factory. you should be able to reuse your scroll inserts, buy the plaid, and have a cover made from the rest. i talked to a guy about doing one and he said that he could, he reproduces factory covers in vinyl and houndstooth. when i bought my plaid it was $85 per yard and it takes about a yard and a quarter. here is a link to sms.

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
I was thinking the houndstooth could have been sewn in.My`70 CustomCamper/30 had the Parchment interior w/Custom cloth full foam seat and Winnebago had sewn-in a plaid cloth.
I`ve never seen a special order number on a spid. That`s what has me wondering. The tach should be an option in itself, regardless of whether the vacuum guage was there or not.But...if it`s some kind of an exception then anything is possible. There would be no "correct" number for that option. I can`t imagine why someone would COPO a truck that already was a promotional package (mass order) just to have the fabric changed (that made it that package) and to get a vaccuum gauge. |
Re: Houndstooth seat question.
This all has me confused, the bench that 72 k10 posted has the same scroll as mine, just different inserts. I do in fact know it was a special ordered truck. It was ordered December 1971, by Tom Blackburn Chevrolet in Arlington Texas, it was the owners personal truck that was used for dealer promotions at the now defunct Green Valley Raceway where they campaigned a 70 camaro drag car. I purchased the truck in march from Mr. Blackburns son, It had been sitting in on jack stands in storage since 1989. The R.PO. for the cluster is in fact 1Z5323. My brother is supposed to bring my camera back tonight, I'll get a pic of the SPID

Re: Houndstooth seat question.
