flat towing

Can my '72 4x4 Blazer w/automatic transmission and stock transfer case be flat towed? If so, do I need to unhook both the front and rear driveshafts or neither?

thank you.

Re: flat towing

If you unlock the front hubs and place the transfer case in neutral then the only thing turning should be the rear axles and driveshaft...

GM says,
1.Transfer case in 2 High
2. transmission in neutral
3. maximum speed 35mph
4. Maximum distance 50 miles

Note: For speeds or distances greater than above, both propshafts must be disconnected at the axle carrier and secured in a safe position. It is recommended that they be removed and stored in vehicle.

Note: Do not exceed speeds as per State laws for towing.

Re: flat towing

I personally hate to pull automatics in neutral, seen too many of them burned up. Since it is a 4x4 put the transfer case in neutral and you don't have to worry about the trans.
The automatic trans has no fluid flow if the engine isn't spinning regardless of what the rearend is doing and that's how they get toasted and why GM puts limits on distance and speed. With the T-case in neutral only the output and driveshaft/axle spins. The spinning of the output gears causes the oil the splash and lubricate everything inside the t-case so you could pull it to the moon and back and not have a problem. If you do it this way you don't even need to take the transmission out of park.

^That`s how I`ve always towed. No problems.I`m not sure how GM came up with their recommendations.

I've towed my 72 about 20,000 miles so far, and no problems. I put the trans in park, t/case in neutral and away we go.
