Started on new cab for the toy

Got most of the rust cut out since taking pics. Passenger side was the worst side as you can see. Got the new hole cut for the tranny cover. More pics to come. Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Here is some pics with some of the new panels in place."http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...00_0001_00.jpg" The cab corner's suck to get the radius right. But i think i got it figured out."http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...00_0003_01.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...00_0004_01.jpg" And just a better pic of the driver side."http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...00_0002_01.jpg" Now to get the front a pillar and kick panel finished up so i can get the rocker in to check fit. Hoping all goes good, that way i can get the driver side done.

Looks like you're doing a great job to me. Some of that aftermarket sheetmetal is a bear to get to fit but is worth it in the end. Can't wait to see some more pics. ...Joe

Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Here's some more progress pics. Got most everything welded up. Fit the rocker in it's hole. Not to bad a fit. As usual i need to work with it a little. The door i used didn't fit to well, so i'm going to bring another one over to check the fit. Need to finish smoothing the rest of my welds so i can primer them for protection. Need to buy a 90 degree air tool so i can final sand all the tight corners. Get this side down so i can get to the other side. I was just happy that the body lines lined up. Wasn't sure the bottom one would. Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Thanks Nate. Hope to have it all done while i'm on vacation. If not, were working 32 hrs next month, so it'll make it even easier to get it done. I wanted to get some pics up for Mike on the cab corners also.

Re: Started on new cab for the toy

New update. For the most part i have the passenger side done. Just need to finish smoothing down all the spot welds. And as said before, cab corners suck to get lined up. I would definitely do them different next time. But it fits as good as i can get it. Here are some new pics. "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0034.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0033.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0032.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0031.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0030.jpg"

Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Looking good! I know what you're saying about the cab corners. They are a handful to get to fit correctly. Actually on my truck The rocker and cab corner on the driver side didn't fit like they were supposed to. The gap on my rocker at the back was right, but got narrower towards the front.

I knew the cab corner was going to be a total ***** as soon as I went to fit it up and saw just how far off it was. I was in a big hurry to get it done to drive it again so corners got and I ended up with one big mess. The driver door rubs the rocker now, and the cab corner doesn't line up with the bedside.

It needs to be cut out completely and redone again, but I found a much better cab that I'll be stripping for paint. It only has a rust spot the size of a quarter on the driver side cab corner. It's a 2wd cab that I need to cut the floor on to change to a 4x4 cab. It'll be a lot less work in the end going that way I think, but if I get really ambituous one of these days, I may cut the left side back out again and see if I can fix my mistake.

Just don't get in a big rush like I did because you will end up regretting it later. If you start getting frustrated like I did, just walk away from it for a while. You'll be glad you did. ...Joe

I hear what your saying. I sometimes get frustrated to easy, bad for things laying around, they end up getting a feet away from where they were. Yeah i'm going to try and figure a different approach on the otherside. Thanks for te encouragement. Daren

Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Made some progress this week. Got the passenger side done other than some finish sanding of spot welds. I'm happy with the results for the most part. At least now i have a better idea on how to do the driver side. Here are a couple pics. Also when all welding is done, i thought of using some kind of paintable silicone sealer on certain spots to help keep water out. That way it doesn't try and rust again. You want auto body seam sealer. Looks like youre making good progress on your repairs.

Thanks, i will remember that. As usual they never get done when ya hope. Cold weather doesn't help either, as i try not to work when the garage is to cold to warm up. I also i'. working on it in a buddies garage, so i work around his time table.

Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Thanks, it has been quite the learning experience, as i've never done any type of body work before. Being a welder by trade probably helps in a way. It looked alot better than the one that's on there now. Hopefully i can get alot of it knock out this week.

Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Got the driver side floor and inner rocker welded in tonight. Had to make a floor patch for a rust hole and make the curved part on the front of the inner rocker. Took some work to get it to fit right to the kick panel. Lucky enough there was enough material on the rocker to make it. Just some cutting and fitting to get it to look right. Then had to fill in the rest of the holes after that. Going to work on the floor support tomorrow then get it put back on it's floor to finish everything else. i wonder whose truck that is in the last pic... haha just kiddin darren... i wish my cab was off chassis like yours it would make life so much easier for us... but i think takin heater and stuff out and wires is more of a challenge then i wanna tackle.. looks good i was wondering how that piece you told me about would fit

88JRFAN 02-23-2009 01:42 AM

Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Yeah it has made things alot easier. Actually it probably wouldn't be that hard. The wiring harness unplugs on the firewall. Then drain the antifreeze and unhook anything else. The heater and a/c boxes aren't that hard to get off, just some screws. Yeah derek's truck had to make it into a pic. See ya tomorrow.

Re: Started on new cab for the toy

Some updated pics. Got the front pillar all welded up by now. The gas tank hole is all done, went real easy. Rear pillar is almost done. Put the outer rocker up and it fit real tight, so i'm going to have to play with it. Going to pop the rear pillar loose at the bottom and see what happens. Kick panel is done also. Hope to have most of it done this weekend."http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0046.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0045.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0044.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0043.jpg" "http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t/100_0042.jpg"
