Bearing Race Removal
How do you remove the bearing race from a rotor? is it machined out or pressed out?
|
Re: Bearing Race Removal
wipe the rotor out...you see an indent in the rotor where you can put a punch or the back lip of the race...from the opposite side hold the punch in the indent and hit with a ball peen or mallet hammer...after you feel it move some...go to opposite side of race and look for lip...place punch on lip and drive it on out...or old school...heat with a torch till red and turn it over and watch it fall out...good luck

Re: Bearing Race Removal
i've always just used a chisel punch or screwdriver wichever i grab first to knock it out from the rear//never had a problem doing it that way

Re: Bearing Race Removal
ok cool. i wasn't sure if it was that easy.
thanks |
Re: Bearing Race Removal
Make sure you use a Brass punch or wood when reinstalling. You don't want to use anything that might mar the new race.

Re: Bearing Race Removal
Another trick to get the new ones in is to place the old race on top of the new race and tap on the old race till the new race is in.

X2

Re: Bearing Race Removal
Use the old race "backwards", so you have a "lip" for driving the old race out.

Re: Bearing Race Removal
Refrigerate(put the new one in the freezer for about an hour) and it should almost drop in.

Re: Bearing Race Removal
I take my welder and run a bead inside the bearing race. It will shrink and fall out when it cools.
|
Re: Bearing Race Removal
hmm thats a new one.. I have heated the outer surface. but the welding thing sounds like it would work.
|
Re: Bearing Race Removal
yea but by the time you weld the bead you could have already just used a punch and knocked it out. Its not that hard. Just sayin ... cool idea though.

Sure, here. But some other applications have blind areas where races can't be pressed out (ie Harley XL steering head bearings) and that's a good method to have in your head. I like to be the go-to guy in a shop for difficult problems. |
