truck noise (video)
here's my truck idling...notice the smoke...what could be wrong? rockers?...smoke went away after it warmed up (it had been sitting a couple weeks)
|
Re: truck noise (video)
wow to me that idle sounds really high...
hows you choke doing? that's my 2cents.. |
Re: truck noise (video)
it is very high...it idles down once it warms up...i'm taking it in this weekend to get looked at by my uncle...he used to own a shop years ago and said he would check it out for me...just thought i would get some opinions.

Re: truck noise (video)
sounds like a really fast ticking to me......possibly valvetrain is my guess!!
|
Re: truck noise (video)
yah thats what it sounds like to me to. probably loose rockers or something
|
Re: truck noise (video)
i personally.. granted i do agree with the guys above
would start off with the simple stuff.. cleaned your carb lately? tuned up lately? OIL? then i would start assuming the worst =-) i dread assuming the worst first .. because it costs me mroe money and then my wife grounds me from NAPA... waa! |
Re: truck noise (video)
well my uncle seems to believe it's rocker noise from what I describe and from what he has heard on it...Hopefully they just need to be tightened or something easy like that...My only concern is the smoke...would this be a problem if the pushrods/rockers were loose, etc? Like I said this time it had been sitting, but it does smoke some even when it doesn't sit, but always goes away...is this just a symptom of an old vehicle...oil level is fine, maybe some lucas would help?

It could be oil that has seeped around the vavle stems and leaked in to the combustion chambers. Normally it is a blue puff at start up only. Or it could be oil bypassing the rings that have lost some of their ability to seal untill you get some heat in the engine. Do you have to add oil often? Do you have to add coolant often? What color is the smoke? Does it do it when it is warm outside? |
Re: truck noise (video)
I have only had this truck for one warm period and this is the first cold period...so as far as i know, no it does not smoke on startup when warm...since i have gotten it though, it has had the head rebuilt, transmission rebuilt, carb rebuilt, and converted to floor shifter instead of 3 on the tree....i also have had the oil pan gasket replaced...no longer leaking any oil there....i do have to add oil occasionally...have not noticed having to add any coolant...the smoke is a blue/white...i guess i would need to see them next to each other in order to distinguish clearly....i posted the video with the tailpipe smoking to show what it was doing...actually the head was rebuilt right before I obtained it, so I don't know what kind of a job was actually done as far as quality or exactly what was done...this truck was a red headed step child before it reached me so who knows...anyway...hopefully i can get it all sorted as I would like the build the 6 instead of replacing it...i think it would be a more unique engine to have.

Re: truck noise (video)
If the heads have been rebuilt it shouldn't smoke on start up. That would be rings but it would do it all the time. Have you had anyone follow you watching the exhaust?
Did you get a list of the work done to the heads? Sounds like the valve lash is on the loose side. |
Re: truck noise (video)
No that's what I was saying...the head job was done right before I obtained it so I'm not real sure what all was done. The shop has since gone under (always a good sign) so I really don't know how to find out....eventually this engine will be rebuilt so as long as i can get it running good at this point i'm good to go.

Re: truck noise (video)
blue smoke = fuel too rich, white smoke = oil
carb needs adjustment, leak down test on engine check pcv valve for excessive oil = blow by = needs rings just my $.02 |
Re: truck noise (video) **UPDATE**
So I got my truck to my uncle the other weekend, he got around to opening it up...turns out, I had about 3 rocker arms completely off track, and one bent push rod...3 arms were completely loose not do anygood, and probably at least another 2 were not adjusted properly...seems as if whomever replaced the head didn't adjust it one bit...my uncle is going to replace the pushrod, check for any more damage, adjust everything correctly, and then readjust the carb...hoping to run like a completely different truck when I get it back...he also lives next door to a body man/transmission expert...he's going to see if he maybe wants to trade my man trans for an auto...hate driving the stick in traffic!!

Re: truck noise (video)
if its cold outside, that smoke is just condensation in the exhuast.... Sounds like it may have a stuck lifter... put about a half a quart of ATF in the oil and change your oil in 500 miles... this will clean it out and loosen some crud up..
