Brakes always On???
 

I have a 1972 1/2 ton 4x4. I replaced master cylinder about 5 weeks ago due to a soft pedal. Now I noticed a brake smell and a drag a few days ago? It looks like the front brakes are staying engaged some not locking but a drag sometimes harder than other times. Could this be a proportioning valve? Any advice?? Thanks

There should have neen a paper in the box telling you about how to adjust the pushrod. You need to shorten the pushrod just a 'lilbit.
You sure it's the front, and not the rear brakes dragging? I've always had the rears drag in this scenerio

Thanks for the response. But I do not understand?? The push rod for the master cylinder? There was info to prime. Do I grind the rod to shorten? How much? 1/8" too much?? Sorry for posting in wrong forum thanks for moving..

There's an adjustment under the dash.It's a threaded nut/rod.I didn't think to take a pic of mine when I had it on the bench but it would be handy since you can usually only do this by Braille.Basically you shorten the length of the rod by screwing it in then tightening the jsam nut.

power brakes, or manual? The adjustment differs between the two.

Did you replace the pads/rotors/calipers at the same time? I replaced the pads and rotors on my little work beater a couple months ago and had the same issue. What I found was a little rust spot on the pins that the calipers slide on. It wasn't allowing the brakes to fully release and they would drag for a little while. Warped a brand new set of rotors before I figured it out.

OK found in book that 1/8" lash in pedal travel I have 1/2" Any short cuts to removing linkage? The bolt through pedal arm will not come out because of steering column. I was thinking of opening a bleed valve to allow pedal to go to floor to remove bolt??? Any ideas???
