one piece driveshaft
I'm finnally getting close to finishing my 5 speed swap and I'm wanting to go to a one piece driveshaft, from the very best of my measurments I need a driveshaft 67" long from the end of the yokes. (longest dist) What have other people taken a one piece out of? I'd sure like to find one I don't have to cut, I have a bit of room to play because my slip yoke has quite a bit of travel, it could be maybe a 1/2" longer or 1" shorter and still work. Any ideas? or if I have to cut and weld I've heard on here about putting some oil inside the driveshaft to get a fluid balance. any insight on this? Thanks!

Cut& balance is only about $70 in my area,IMO good money spent. From what I understand, you should run a 4" dia shaft when going to a 1 pc in the 5 1/2-6 ft range on lenght(it can stepdown on the ends). To set up & measure lenght, you need to slide the slip yolk all the way the trans, mark it,then pull it out 3/4"-1",then measure C to C on the caps.Good luck.......69 longhorn.

Jesse,
You might look at large GM cars for your drive shaft. I have one from a 86 Caprice Wagon that I'm going to have shortened for my SWB and 700r4. I don't know the exact length of it, but it is close to what you need. ------------------ Woody '69 Custom-10 Deluxe Short Fleetside,Factory 350cid/TH400,A/C,PS,PB,Carpet Coming soon 700R4, 350 Crate Engine, Pwr Disks... |
yeah look under full size rwd cars, lots of them are in the 60's" for lengths, i have a stash of shafts from cars and such, they are all right around that length

I went to the local yard today and I actually found a driveshaft the exact length, 66 3/4" ! I'm still amazed at my luck! I put it in, rolled it down a hill with the motor running, popped it in gear, drove it around for the first time in almost a year, with no clutch control, or brakes! I still need the hyd clutch hose and brake lines. Wasn't very practical but it was fun, and loud! Finnaly!

The axle is off a 72 chev, I don't know what the shaft is off of and the tranny's from a 90 chev 1/2t. Thanks for the help!
