You can buy the kit from Jegs or any performance outlet, then you will need some machine work to clearance the block and bore for the new pistons. Personally I would look for a 350 truck block in a wreaking yard.

isnt the 327 block the same as a 350 block?

No it depends if you have the early 327 or late one . I'm sure it can be done but if you have the early block it will take a special crank shaft and more machine work. I built mine from a 350 and the cost was almost as much as buying one from jegs. You also need to have a machinist that has a good balancing machine as the stroked crank is harder to balance.

your 327 is the small journal crank shaft and I personally would not use it for a 383. the 350 should be fine. You need to find a good machinist and talk to him about what you want to do.

you'd be $$ ahead to get a later model roller 350. Even when you add the zink to the oil, flat tappet cams just don't last (or make the power) that a roller cam does.
You can sell the old stuff to get back the money you'll spend on the late model engine.

This is easy, large journal block, buy a balanced assembly, make sure the rod bolts clear the block, 9-9.5 compression, not too much cam, nice intake and carb and stand on the GAS!!!!!

First of all,you don`t get 383 out of a 400 crank in a 327.A 383 is from a 400 crank in a 350.See?:D

the 327 and 350 have the same bore so if you go .030 over with a 3.75 stroke you get 4.030 x4.030 x.7854 x 3.75 (400 crank stroke) x 8 =382.6681 or 383

Re: 327 into a 383 stroker

a 305 engine can be used if a 350 is not available.

i'd take a 305 with a stroker crank and not worry about the bigger pistons found in the 350. fuel injection and a low rpm camshft

in a truck, efficient air flow and gobs of torque are what counts. if you keep the standard 350 bore, you get a 377 with the stroker (400) crank.

i have a 406 (400 bored .03) that will replace the 307 in my 72 burb 2wd 3/4 ton. will have to find something more highway friendly than the 4.57 rear gear when i do the swap. but for now i need the gearing for towing duties. shows how much low end torque makes driving a pleasure.

You`re right/I`m confused.i have a hard time keeping this stuff strait in my head.We were just talking about all these combinations on friday at my friend`s machine shop, too.

I wouldn't even bother with doing a stroker kit on a 305. You'd be way ahead just doing a stock stroke 350 rather than stroking a 305 since the stock 350 will have more cubes than a stroked 305. (334 cubic inches) Even though the 305 and 350 share the same main journal size it still requires special pistons and the same machine work as turning a 350 into a 383. Just my 2 cents. ...Joe

Re: 327 into a 383 stroker

a 305 has such small bores that it is hard to get air in them, and you are limited to smaller valves further limiting it's air intake.
I'd run a 307 before a 305. The only thing a 305 is good for is putting it's later model heads on an early 287/307

Re: 327 into a 383 stroker

speed o motive use to sell a small journal stroker kit. I would look for a 350 block insted though like everyone else has said.

Re: 327 into a 383 stroker

Does your 327 look like this? This is looking at the rear of the engine where the distributor goes, the red circle is distributor the yellow is what your looking for. If it does not have what is in yellow you have a large journal 327 with a 4" bore, just like the 350. they only have different cranks.

You might come out ahead getting something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-3...spagenameZWDVW
instead of rebuilding, forged pistons, more compression for 1500
