rebuild front drums or start to disc..

i started to rebuild my drums and gotta new mc....well i spend 2 hrs on 1 hub, and didnt even finish it!!!!!!!!! (i got the mc on in those 2 hrs also) but im thinking id be money ahead to swap out to disc since i already have most everything i'll need...(i gotta whole disk truck to steal parts from)

so should i rebuild my drums for now (already got the parts)

or should i take the spindles off my 72 and put on 68 and go front disc?

and tomorow is MY last day of school, so i have all summer to figure it out, but would like to get done by saturday night (car show on the mtn)
but idk if i get done that soon (gotta get lots of hay put up)

so what should i do and thanks

start a disc swap, you won't regret it.

Re: rebuild front drums or start to disc..

are discs easier to work on...cause all them sprins in my drums are a pita

wat i think ima do is go disc 5 lug in my front and stay 6 lug in rear for awhile..

so outside of balljoints and tierod stuff the 71-72 spindle stuff will work?

what should i replace, can i use the old brake lines, bearings, pads?

and can somebody tell me what tie rods and balljoints i'll need

Discs are much easier to work on. No return springs like drums.

Re: rebuild front drums or start to disc..

i hate those blasted springs lol

okay, will the 71 72 balljoints press into my a arms, or will they be the wrong size? and ima wing it on the tie rods lol, rite now i just wanna get the spindle on there correctly and get em workin lol

i need from autozone

72 chevy brakelines (?just the rubber ones?)
72chevy brakepads
72chevy balljoints (ALL)

and what else? thanks

If you only need to stop hard once, drums are better. The master cylinders are different, discs need more volume of fluid to stop, I think you may need another new master of you switch. I would finish the drums since you already have the parts, unless your planning on auto crossing this truck. The fronts are easy, no parking brake.

im doing one on mine currently. i got my parts off of a suburban, dont get suburban parts!!!! but i would get new pads, calipers, bearings, balljoints and any other thing that might possibly be worn out. i got my brake lines from this place called "right stuff" i didnt really like them, they were a real pain to get in, i think they could fit a little better. the upper and lower ball joints (for a truck) fit right in. you will need the ball joints and tie rods for a 71 or 72, whatever your parts truck is.

Good Luck!!!:chevy:

oh yeah. btw you will want the master cylinder and power brake booster if it has one and the brackets too. and take lots of pics of the parts truck.

Re: rebuild front drums or start to disc..

just redid all my drums new MC and lines. Stops pretty good to me and the one time i locked em up and left 40ft of tire marks  discs are nice I say gather parts save up and get ready to do it all at once if your gonna do a disk swap. since tmw is your last day of school you've got all summer. Just doing your drums now will get you back on the road quick and then when you have the time and parts do the disk swap

Re: rebuild front drums or start to disc..

you should get new bearings you'll need different brake lines both hard and soft as well as mounting tabs on crossmember a different master cylinder and combination valve for the disc setup

i'd spend a day doing the drums and getting them finished and truck on road// you may be able to get the disc conversion done before you start school in the fall

oldblue1968chevy 05-20-2009 05:41 PM

Re: rebuild front drums or start to disc..

well im nearly commited to the disc swap now im pullin em off lol

what are the 'mounting tabs on the crossmemeber'???

i need hard lines huh...should i get prebent ones? or bend them myself or what, or could i use the old ones from the 71?

cdowns 05-20-2009 06:18 PM

Re: rebuild front drums or start to disc..

it would be alot less work to just unbolt the crossmembers and switch in the complete 71 crossmember and suspension and brakes// it's less than 20 bolts total to getr the job done

oldblue1968chevy 05-20-2009 08:17 PM

Re: rebuild front drums or start to disc..

well, too late lol probably would have been easier

what ima replace

rotors there worn good
pads
soft brake lines (autozone can only get the pass. side, were can i get other side??)
balljoints (all)

and ima try to reuse my 72 mc and proportinong valve and the hard lines....

will have about 250 plus my time (thats alot of time lol) in the job, all ive got done so far is gotten the 72 calipers rotors spindle off so far...tomorow after hay gets in ima take my drums off and go to town in gmaws accord lol

do i sound like im on the right track or is something wrong? if im doin something wrong correct me please and thank ya

Why wouldnt you just go ahead and swap the rears too. You are talking an extra couple of hours and you are good yo go

napa You need to hit the knuckles as hard as you can with about a 3 pound hammer. 3 to 10 licks and they will bust loose. Just make sure you loosen the nut off but leave it on or you might need to go to the dentist
