Wind Wings ?? One Piece windows?
i have a 53 Chevy truck and wanted to change out the wind wings to one piece windows. Is there a kit out there to do this? Or has anyone done this process and have any direction or advice?
thanks in advance for any help! Byrne66 |
Re: Wind Wings ?? One Piece windows?
Don't know when the wing windows started but 47 48 are one piece
so you should be able to use those. Check cl auto parts and there is a guy in Santa Clara that sells 47 up stuff to do the job. I like wing's myself. |
Re: Wind Wings ?? One Piece windows?
The wings started in '51. You could find earlier doors to.

Re: Wind Wings ?? One Piece windows?
I have a 1951. It's the first year for the wing windows and the last year for turn down door handles. I Haven't really looked that close at mine but I do know that the wings are removable and replacable and you can see the kits at www.bowtiebits.com and other places, if you would like to see all the parts involved. I only said all that, to say this. I'm guessing you could remove them from you exsiting doors and convert to full windows but you may need to also replace your window regulators. Anybody feel free to jump in here if I'm wrong. I have not actually investigated this possiblity, it's just an assumption.

Byrne, i'm going to do the same change you are but i have a different solution I have a 52 chevy but i also bought a 50 chevy 5 window cab, I thinking the doors will just swap out but the latches and strickers are different I think all the catalogs sell different ones so if anyone has any helpful points that would be great.

Re: Wind Wings ?? One Piece windows?
hang on those wind wings are nice. i kept mine and love how they work. if they're 1/2 open all the wind goes around the door window and it's quieter than when they are closed (less wind in your ear!). also if you don't have ac you can really pump in the outside air if there wide open. I would think about it.....

Re: Wind Wings ?? One Piece windows?
I have not seen anyone selling a kit for a one piece window for these trucks. I have seen people graft in the front window channel from the early doors to the vent window doors but it looks like too much of a PITA.
I kept my vent windows and enjoy them. I did a rebuild on mine which you can find on this link. http://www.chevytrucks.org/tech/ventwindowrebuilt.htm Keep the vents. |
Re: Wind Wings ?? One Piece windows?
I'm currently working on converting a set of '52 doors to single windows as well. So far I've gutted both doors with the exception of the mid door support which is common on both. I've had to drill out the spot welds on the front channel and the wiper strip that runs along the top, since it's all one peice. The winders are different as well since the '47's use a scissor type winder while the '52 has a single lever winder.
I opted to lose both winders completely and will be mocking up and installing power windows from a '93 Grand Cherokee (the winders look dramatically the same as a '47 with motor assist). It should be a simple spacer job but will require that the doors have skins to cover the mounting bolts. I found the easiest way is to have both doors side by side so you can judge what has to be moved or altered. But if you can find a set of single window doors in the first place that are in great shape... by all means go that route! Cheers, Ted. |
