which engine, procharged 454, 502, 0r 540
Ok, this is what i want. The most RELIABLE and somewhat inexpensive (in that order) way to get about 700-750 crank horsepower and about the same amount of torque. I plan on using this engine mostly for racing, but will still get driven on the street quite often to cruises and meets. Here are 4 options i have came up with; low compression 454, forged internals and a procharger. low compression 502 with forged internals and a procharger. high compression high revving 502. and lastly high compression high revving 540.
with the procharged set-ups i am going with meth injection as well so i can get more boost and a higher compression ration without detonation. so i would really appreciate any advice from all of yall with much more experience than me (most of the people on here) |

any big block with a prochager will net you 700... on pump gas..

High compression means race gas,or timing pulled so far back, performance suffers. You can't beat cubic inches, how about a low compression 540 with a pro charger.

well when i say high compression i'm talking about 11:1 so if i went with aluminum heads then it should be ok with 93 octane

and a procharged 540 is out of my budget

If you debating on the 454 or 502 both procharged, go with the 502 and gear it/stall it apropiatly.

A procharged motor if built and tuned properly can be more streetable since you don't have to run big everything to get the same horse power. Also consider a methenal injection system. You can run more boost on pump gas. |
Re: which engine, procharged 454, 502, 0r 540
why not just get a 572/720 hp crate motor? its got a warranty, its reliable, and its got your 700hp. and you are gonna spent that much with a pro charger anyway !

Re: which engine, procharged 454, 502, 0r 540
just a thought here, but a GM ZZ502 shortblock (all forged guts, w/ 7/16 rods) gets 8.75:1 with a 118cc head. Add to that a set of CNC'd AFR 315cc heads (flows nearly 400cfm, but moderate runner size for BIG torque) with a 121cc chamber (will net about 8.5:1 on the ZZ502 shortblock with a .041" head gasket) and whatever Procharger you've already decided on. You'll probably want a custom cam to go with the blower/boost you decide to run, but this seems like pretty easy way to get 800hp/800lb-ft and not break a sweat.

Some of the post look a bit off or i am misreading them. If you put a pro charger on anything, the block and heads eng should be under 9.0-1, preferably 8.5-1 compression. With the charger you will be pushing the 93 octane limits. If the engine alone is over 9.5-1/10.0-1 you will not run 93.
I personally like Bosshogg idea. have seen a shortblock 502 with AFR 305 stock(no cnc work) push 620hp with just a .550 lift cam. so add a pro charger and your talking 800+ easily. |

easy answer !!! ... e85 !

I believe there is more potential from a procharged BB. You can have a milder street motor and the procharger will provide all the power you want. Yes it will probably be a bit more expensive, but you will have more potential as well. You start with 700hp, then a year or two later you want more, add an intercooler run more boost, the potential goes on. |
Re: which engine, procharged 454, 502, 0r 540
What procharger head unit? The Vortech YSI (much cheaper and more reliable) on a 496 or so with a decent solid roller with less than 10psi will get you 900+ which means no more stock driveshaft, tranny or diff plus chassis and suspension modifications.
If you ONLY want 750hp then build a naturally aspirated egine - a cheap 496ci with worked over factory heads and a solid roller can get you that. |
