thinking of tires

well ive lifed my truck were 35s are o small and thinking of going with 38-44 found a awsome deal on some 44 gumbo mudders 300 bucks with 75% life on them but i thinking i would need a diff power stearing pump with 44 im going with lower gears 4.10 maybe 4.56 just wanted to know what u guys thought and any thing you could tell me about running such a big tire also and pic of 1980-87 short bed runing 38s-44 would make me happy to se longbeds are welcomed too:gmc:

Mudder 01-12-2003 01:01 PM

if you are going to tires larger than 35's you for sure need axles upgrades if you are running 10 bolts. You may be alright running 38's down the street with 4.10 or 4.56's but thats about all you'll be able to do with it. If you are going bigger than 35's you might want to start looking for some 3/4 tons. Running 38's you really need 4.56's. A large tire and wheel puts a lot of stress on axleshafts.

chevy68388 01-12-2003 06:44 PM

well i have a 14 bolt geting built when ever i bring the guy the axle as for the front still looking ive had 38s on the truck befro slugish on take off but i asume that in low lock it would be fineand im not scared to break these axles i have a 44 and 12 bolt in the shed out of a parts truck hmm im now thinkin 38s with 4.10s if my guy that builds axels thinks i need more lower gears ill go 4.56:gmc:

drakkmar 01-14-2003 04:35 AM

I knew a lady runnin' 40's on a burb w/ 14 bolts front and rear
and she had 4.11's and no locker's w/ a part time kitted 203

blazerboy72 01-14-2003 06:22 PM

Here is a pic of my truck, sorry it is not the 81-87 style pickup but since you asked about big tires. I think bigger is better:D It has 3/4 ton axles under it w/ 4:11 gears. Baby roars down the hwy. and I love it.

that thing is beautiful and from the looks of it, I'd buy it for that price if you were just one state away. Sorry I didn't contribute to the post, just had to give a little compliment.

MAC67 02-02-2003 01:02 AM

two awsome trucks,,boys you guys have got it down,,black short box 4wds,,thats it all the way,,uhhhhhhh wait a min ,,why am i here what was the question ?,,oh yeah,,deffinatley ditch the 10 bolts and look for a corp 14 and a dana 44 at least,, i would love to have a 60 ,,but ive run 44 " boggers with a 44 front and tromped on em pretty hard and never had any ounce of a problem ,,and it was with a damn healthy bigblock so i had no prob turning them

orionwy2002 02-02-2003 07:37 PM

It will be easier to switch to new axles now and get 4.56. Don't spend the money regearing a 12 or 10 bolt because they will die quickly with 44"s. You might want to go 4.88 if you plan gong offroad much.

chevy68388 02-02-2003 08:12 PM

well im gettin a 14 bolt and a dana 44 3/4 prolly going to 4.56 with 38s no bigger

Mudder 02-02-2003 08:15 PM

38's and 4.56's is a good combo

chevy68388 02-03-2003 01:17 AM

i hope so cause i realy dont want to lose power or my high way driving speed:gmc:

chevy68388 02-04-2003 04:43 PM

how hard is it to put in a dana 60 cause in going from my ten bolts to a 14 and a 44 i would go with a 60 but i would have to find one for cheap ive herd its just a bolt up swapwell and u bolts:gmc: o one more thing is that a old millitary truck

Yukon Jack 02-04-2003 06:12 PM

If you can get setup with disc brakes in addition to the stronger axles, that would be great. A 44" tire is awfully heavy and will tax a brake system.

konajoe 02-04-2003 08:18 PM

The 60 will bolt right in place of your 10bolt. You will need the u-bolt spring plates from the 1ton to fit the larger diameter of the 60's axle tubes.

No it's not an ex-military truck. I needed to paint it with something to protect it and didn’t want to spend tons of money on a fancy paintjob that would end up getting scratched up :D
