Going to boneyard to find 9" rearend
Well I'm going to try to find a 9" at the yards soon. I'll be trying to find one that has the following:
True-trac with a 4.11 gear or close. As close to the width of the 56 truck rearend. What is the stock width from flange to flange on the 56 rearend? Which vehicle will most likely have such a rearend? I've heard of the 1977 Broncos but they be difficult to find. Tri5 |

I can't answer your original question---But, don't overlook the 8.8 Ford rearends. They come in many ratios, limited slip and disc brake configurations. The Explorer rears (That I have seen) usually have posi, disc brakes and 3.73 or 4.11 gears. Jeff |

There is a tag on the rear cover. Example: 4.10 posi would have a tag that looks like (4 L 10 8.8) 3.73 posi would be (3 L 73 8.8) The "L" stands for Limited Slip. If there is an empty spot where the "L" is in the example then the rear is an Open type---One Legger.

I went with the exploder 8.8 in my 59 and it seems to be a good fit. Yes the stock axle truck width is 62" from mounting to mounting flange. If you are looking to have the stock width and chevy lug pattern you can buy 1 inch spacers and be within a quarter inch if Im not wrong. As Jeff said, look for the L on the diff tag. Iv noticed that usually the 4 door explorers come standard with 3.73 locking diffs, other then the open option which seems to be standard in the 2 dr sport tracks. Also look for 95+ as they have disk brakes.

I currently have a narrow 9" with disk brakes but the caliper hits the frame due to notching I did, this is why I want to get a 9", I will reuse the caliper and rotors since they already have the chevy bolt pattern drilled.
I'm also going to try to find one with 4.11 gears if possible. I'm not going to narrow the search for just one particular vehicle but the 73 - 79 F150 will be high on my list from what I've read and been told. |
Back from my trip to the boneyard
Here's the best I could to do today while visiting 3 junkyards.
A 9" from a 1986 Bronco 4x4, with the tag discription. First line: WFE BK2 4D03 Second line: 3L 50 9 S319D So I'm assuming that this is 3.50 gear Traction loc or POSI with big axle bearings and 31 spline. I can't tell what the date code is, someone please help with this? I'll use the disk setup that I have from the other 9" rear end. The hardest part is lifting this beast. Tri5 |
