I found a set of Motown 220 heads for $400.. opinions on my application.

I guess they were used in a drag car for a few passes. I had a leaking head gasket so I pulled my heads and I'm pretty much freshening up my top end. My lower end is all stock though. These heads are set up for a solid roller cam/lifters but they're swapping out the valve springs to stock springs so they work better for my application. I do plan on adding a cam and all of that good stuff in the future. Will these heads work well in in my application? These heads are around $1100 new.

My application:
350 cid
Headers
Edelbrok 1406 Carb
Aluminum Intake
Oreilly's Crate Motor
Stock Internals

Specs on the Motowns:
220 cc runners
64 cc chambers
2.05 x 1.60 severe duty valves
New Comp 10 degree retainers & locks

I think those 220 cc runners are going to kill low end torque on a stock motor.

Assuming you have a 350...way too big on the intake runner. Stock heads are in the 157 range and vortecs are 170. More suited for HEALTHY 400. It does sound like a decent deal though.

That's a good price for just about any aftermarket heads. Buy 'em for that $400 & trade across for some heads better suited for your current set-up (or put them on the shelf for a future build).

He has a set of Vortecs that have quite a bit of machine work done to them and they're fresh that he said he'd let go for $400 also but I don't want to have to buy a new intake.

You'd be better off with the Vortecs. There's a Summit branded Vortec intake for about $140.

Or.... buy the Motown 220's @ $400 & swap 'em for some built vortecs w/intake. Someone out there will have what you need. Like I said, that's a good price if they're legit (no hacking, un-trashed, etc...).

Hmm. I think I'll try to talk him down on the Vortecs.

Went with the Vortecs :)

now I just need to pull the press-in studs, tap for screw-in studs, then buy some guide plates, centerbolt valve covers and a Vortec intake.. dammit might as well throw a cam and lifters into the mix while I'm at it. haha

You done good! Those 220 ports were WAY TOO BIG.

Your truck just picked up 30+ horsepower.
