crossmember

i was looking at my crossmember in my 78 and im getting ready to put a 700r in the truck along with a 5.7 out of a 89 1500. the crossmember in the 89 just goes straight across to the other frame rail and the 78 crossmember has a low side and a high side. will the 78 crossmember work ? thanks steve

Re: crossmember

If im wrong i will be corrected..but i believe that all you have to do is move the location depending on the length of the trans... the motor will sit in the existing mounts fine

Re: crossmember

On my 86 when I put a 700r4 in just slid original crossmember back and drilled a 2 new holes and used 2 original holes I believe.

Re: crossmember

I used a X-Member from a 70 C-10 for my 700R-454 conversion. BUT, my truck had a 250-6 and a 3 speed.

I could be wrong, but I think the high low sides on yours are for exhaust clearance.

Re: crossmember

either will work, but I would use the one from the '89, I don't like the over/under cross-member.

EDIT:
I just realized the 89 is the different body style. I believe the frame is wider on those....just stick with the crossmember in the '78 unless you feel like modifying the '89
