My New 1969 Custom 10 Project

Last weekend I purchased a 1969 Custom 10 off of Ebay for $585. Suffice to say this baby needs a good amount of work. Cab corners, floors, bedsides, rockers, etc all have rust.

It was advertised on Ebay as a 350, but after careful investigation it is an original 307. Some vital stats on the truck.

True mileage: unknown. Odo reads 59k, but I am betting it turned over.

The dash wiring had caught on fire in the past and was basically destroyed. Luckily the ends on the harness and fuse block were still intact, so I spent this past weekend repairing the harness with new wire and some new ends. As of now I have all of the electrical in the truck functioning and the motor starts and runs very well.

The shift linkage is very tight when you try to pull it back toward you to shift it, so I will be working on that situation next in order to be able to test out the tranny.

Lots of sheet metal arrived in the mail over the weekend, so I will be busy on that for the forseeable future. The only pics I have at the moment are the ones from the auction(see below). The one strange situation I will need to deal with is that at some point a sport truck wheel was installed. Still deciding what to do on that.

I would like to restore the truck to original, but that may be a little too ambitious for me. We'll see how it shapes up as I move forward on the project.

Re: My New 1969 Custom 10 Project

This weekend I removed the steering wheel and turn signal assembly. I sprayed the shift linkage with WD40 and worked it back and forth a few time and voila! - works like a charm.

After this little project I removed the windshield (damaged by the dash fire). The top corners have the typical rust. The passenger side more so that the DS.

This evening I am picking up a rusty '71 3/4 ton with a 350 / 4 speed that will be providing a windshield and various sheet metal for this project. At 300 bucks I could not pass it up. Pics to come soon.

Re: My New 1969 Custom 10 Project

i think with the rust along the back of you cab floor , your truck would be a shoe in for the whole cab floor replacement.. If they would have had the complete floors when i did mine i would have gladly gone that way i think it would take less time than patching the rest, i know you didnt ask just my 2 cents

Re: My New 1969 Custom 10 Project

I have another cab with rust in the front, but that whole section is clean. The rear support and floor are going to be coming from that cab. Thanks for the input, though. I did think about going that route. But I got a whole truck for 300 which will help me repair the rear floor area, the top of the window area, and the bedsides, as well as providing a clean grill and window glass.

It's crazy, but all of the areas I need to patch the 69 are clean on the 71, and the rest of the 71 is a rust bucket.

I got some more work on the passenger side done this weekend. Also dug up a pic of the cab corner before it was repaired.

Nice truck you got there, and 2 of them for 900 bucks, sweet, part one out and make one good one, make some money back. I look forward to seeing some more progress. Just do not get worked up over small things, sit back and enjoy every minute you are working on it, remember it is a hobby and enjoy it. Congrats.

Finished all of the major welding on the passenger side and cut apart the driver's side. I was in such a groove with the nice weather and all that I went ahead and welded the driver's side cab corner in as well....

Re: My New 1969 Custom 10 Project

Been awhile since I have updated the thread. Got all of the cab work done for the most part, and it's on the road now. Gave it an interim coat of semigloss black until I can get the bed sides welded and start working on paint prep.

I started the rust repair on the bedsides. The sections came out of the donor '71.

After all the fun. All that's left on the sides is sand and paint. Still a lot to do on the inside of the bed.
