Z bar/bell crank question
 

What years of truck can i get a Z bar/bell crank from for my 71 chev 350, 4spd?

I cant compare to mine as someone stole the one off my truck while it was stored at a friends.:(

Im sorry for the possibly ignorant question, but what is a Z bar and where on the truck is it located?? I have never heard of such a thing other then in reference to say like motor cycle handle bars that are in the shape of Z's.

Its part of the clutch linkage that goes from the ball stud on the engine block to the frame. Connects the clutch pedal to the rod goint to the clutch fork. Hopefully that makes sense, its been a long day. :chevy:

"Z-Bar" is accepted Chevy slang for the clutch bell crank.
Back to the original question-- I think the '67-'72 V8 4x4 Z-Bar is fairly common.

The 67-72 V-8 trucks, (2wd or 4wd) Z-bars will fit. The 6 cylinder Z bars are too long.

73+ will not work at all then?
Also i have read conflicting answers about the ball stud on the block. Does it thread directly into the block or into a bracket?

Threads into the block. Don't know if a 73 and up z bar would work.

I don't believe that they will work. I know that Grumpy's Truck Parts here in Phoenix, AZ carries them..... After breaking the weld on one of mine, I was frantic at the time to find a replacement. Granted, that was before I joined this wonderful board.

Ah, that makes sense. Learn something new everyday. I just took mine off my 67 yesterday. Not planning on keeping the manual. I can take a picture of it and if it works for you its all yours for just the shipping.

Yes it is off of a 327, have the bracket that the ball stud screws into as well. But let me know cause Im sure it would be way easier and cheaper for you to get the one from Pumpkin if its the right one. The one I have needs to be refurbished also, the bushings/dust shims are pretty haggered.

If I remember correctly the ball stud in the picture is mounted to the block and the z bar in the picture has a nut on the other end (with another ball) that mounts to the frame, just like the 1st picture. 2nd picture the z bar is flipped around. Your frame should have the other bracket riveted on from the factory.

Is the bracket needed on the block or is it just for blocks that dont have the threaded hole?
Mine is just threaded into the block itself. But im not sure if its the original engine or not.

The bracket with the ball stud bolts onto the block and the other end has a ball stud that just has a nut and it sits inside a bracket that is riveted to the frame as Mak191 said. Although I can also send the frame bracket as well. But again just let me know because Im sure that it would be more cost and time friendly to get one that was already in canada.

My '71 GMC Jimmy has just the ball stud that goes right into the block. No engine side bracket. Is that a K/5 thing?
'73 -and-later clutch linkages are way different from '67-'72 series stuff.

2wd uses the bracket on the engine, but I beleive that the 4wd uses a screw in ball in the block(due to engine placement). crazy AL

My 2wd only has the screw in ball stud. It may not be original, but how for off would the alignment of the bell crank be that way?

If your truck was originally an I6, it most likely has a sb mounted on the original 6cyl frame stands.....that moves the eng back 3 1/2" from factory sb V8, or same as 4wd spot. In that case i have found a screw in ball to work out well. can you post a pic of the eng compartment? crazyAl

Actually i went back out and checked it a little closer and wiped the oil and grime off a bit and it appears it does have the bracket with the ball. So i was mistaken before i guess. :o
