Proper way to lubricate speedometer cable
 

I have a 87' V10 and my speedometer is bouncy from a stop up until about 35 mph. After that, it levels out but still moves a bit. I want to pull out the cable to clean and grease it, but was wondering if the best way is to pull it out from the cluster end, or the transmission end? I made the stupid mistake of removing my TV cable one time and had the Old Faithful of tranmission fluid come pouring out, so removing anything from a tranny when full scares me. So, best end to remove it from, will tranny fluid come out if removed from that end, and any other caveats with doing it. I'm also going to use PB Blaster Garage door Lube. Had good luck with that stuff. Thanks!

hey i dont know about 2wd's, but on my np203 i can pull the spedo cable right out of the T case with no problems.


i'm not sure how well lubing it will work in the long run, i picked up a new cable about a year ago from lordco. it was only $20

The cable will only come out from one end and if I remember right, it's the tranny end that the speedo cable core will slide out of.

If I recall correctly, the cable will only come out from the end behind the speedometer cluster. Don't worry- No fluids will come out when you take the transmission end loose.
When you lubricate, use a graphite based lubricant, it should last longer than WD 40 or similar lubes.

Out the top and you shouldn't have to remove the bottom from the tranny to re-install if you give it a slow turn when getting close to all the way in.

Like 6772fan suggested use Graphite lube.IT will make it last longer

I had to do some digging to find this................

Years ago my brother had a really neat tool for lubing speedo cables, worked great.
