taking the cab off
 

I am just about ready to take the cab off. I have saw where people use an engine hoist to pick the cab, but I cant find any pics of where they attached straps/ chains/ or whatever. If anyone has any pics I would appreciate it.

I have used the cab/bed lift that a fellow board member sells the plans to. (rockrln)I made it and it worked well. Unfortunately I decided to sell it. I have also recently used a 4x4 with a bracket made to hold the 4x4 mounted to the hoist but its a little unstable but I did move the cab around by myself. I put the 4x4 right to the front of the door openings.

Safer to get four buddies to help lift it off...

some have bolted a 2x6 to the hoist arm, others use chains to the floor, or the unit that is offered on the board as described above.

I'd have to agree. I used the engine hoist method to remove it and did so by myself. When I put the cab back on it was me and 3 other guys. It's much easier using the manhandling method.

4 stout boys can handle that cab EASEY, & walk the rails ;) In my younger days, I could hang onto my end of 600 lbs, but I only went 175 soakin wet.....it bites to get old! Now this 5' 9"old man goes 250(ouch!).Little bro ,still says that he be the bar tender, & I be the bouncer(you gotta love the respect). In a hard bar fight I need the "lil bioch" behind me(50lb pitbull, That curls up next to my ribs & sleeps every nite). trust me guys, that is the only dog that I have seen jump 6' up, Or have enough "smoke " to TAKE this old mans
pillow.....flop it up on the old mans back.....& go to sleep! You damn sure dont mess with the old man that she loves;) crazyAL

hey austx68 would you mind sending me the dimensions of your cab dolly,and any improvements you might have done if you had to do build a second dolly,any pointers are greatly appreciated

It's light enough when empty that you can get pretty redneck about it. I used motorcycle tie-down straps to pull it from the rafters...

I pulled this photo from an older posting. Make sure to go with the 12" recommended. He initially went with 24" and it was too high. Mine is 12"

I put a pair of 2x4's together or a 4x4 thru the cab in the doors up front towards the vent window. It still leans forward a little bit because of the brake booster and a/c stuff.

I use two chain falls for lifting cabs off most of the time. Here is a pic of my son's Burb being installed back onto the frame using two hoists.

I have taken cabs off after they are stripped by bolting two 1x6 oak boards to the outriggers so that the cab rests on the boards which sit on the frame. With the wheels removed the cab can be lifted/dragged on the boards off the front of the frame onto a skid or cab dolly with two guys.

thats sweet. i was thinking of running a chain hoist from my garage ceiling to lift my cab but i am worried the rafter may not suuport the cab.

I put a 4x4 across 3 rafters and pulled a 4.3 v6 before.

i thought about that but the wife didnt want me putting holes in the gargae ceiling and i just had some friends come over to help me

I built a set of A-frames out of 4 inch square tubing. It is a little pricey but they can be used for many other things. Good luck!

Great tool, makes bed and cab removal a 1 man job in about 10 minutes.

If your wife is anything like mine,she wont care about the holes in the garage roof......its what it costs to fix it ,that starts the problem:lol: crazyAL

About 37 or so years ago I rented a house that has a two car garage as it's best and most redeeming feature. I poked a couple of holes in the ceiling and laid a 4x4 across several of the rafters with a chain looped though the holes. As far as I know that chain is still there. We swapped a couple of engines using a ratchet come along.

The new edition of Classic Trucks (April) shows a HF Gantry crane that they used to lift a cab but I have used the one I built to lift an swap Van roofs and cabs along with a lot of engines.

Roof on the other van all by lifting the roof with the gantry and cherry picker and rolling one out an one under and letting the roof back down again.
That I beam is govt surplus aluminum with steel tubing for the frame so it isn't that heavy but sure is handy.
