Another brake convertion ?

FIRST: My truck is a 1964 GMC 3/4 ton with stock drum brakes. SECOND: I have a 1974 chevy 3/4 ton that I bought about 20 years ago to use on the ranch as a slave . i used it untill the moter gave up the gost, the transfer grumble so I parked it about 5 years ago. NOW MY ? CAN I use the power brake booster from it on my gmc with drum brakes, and if so what is involved . thanks MIKIE

Re: Another brake convertion ?

I dont think so, the disc/drum master is different than a drum/drum I believe. I would probably call Master Brakes and ask them.

Re: Another brake convertion ?

you can split the lines use a 70 or older double m/c with it and not use the prop valve

Re: Another brake convertion ?

why don't you swap the whole front end cross member brakes and all from the 74 to the 64, its a direct bolt on and then you can use the master clyinder and booster

Re: Another brake convertion ?

THE TRUCK IS A 4X4. I forgot to say tha part, although I did say the transfer was grumbling. I have thought about makeing it into a 4x4 but that would be down the road.

Re: Another brake convertion ?

If you want power brakes on your '64 I would recommend switching the master cylinder to one designed for power drum brakes. I have used the one for the '67-'70 pickups but this requires a split brake system. I'm not sure if you could use a '63-'66 power brake master on the newer booster. The dual reservior master cylinder is a better and safer one to use.

Re: Another brake convertion ?

THANKS , now if I use a double m/c out of a 67 to 70 pu do I need any one from those years or a 1/2 ton , 3/4 ton or what. Also why won't the one from the 74 work? I have been reading up on this board about spliting the lines and that does seam to be the best way to go . SORRY for the dumb ? but i just want it strate in my mind. THANKS AGIAN FOR THE INFO & EVERYONES HELP ! MIKIE

Re: Another brake convertion ?

because the 74 has a pressure check for the disk brakes. you will need a m/c from a drum drum truck.

Re: Another brake convertion ?

SO just go to the auto parts store and ask for a double m/c for a 67-70 pu drum / drum right. again thanks

You will need to cut the rod that goes to the brake pedal and extend it also. You can use the brake rod from the 64 becuase it is adjustable. The later model brake booster rods are too short. Ask me how I know. :D
The two middle holes will line up and you can drill the two lower holes. You can cut the top of the bracket off as you will probably not be using the upper holes, or you can just leave it.

I can get a picture of it Thursday for you. I bolted it to the truck but I can take it off. We basically cut the rod in half and used the other side of the 65 rod and welded it up with a sleeve over it.

Re: Another brake convertion ?

I have been reading up on splitting the brake lines and cannot find where the font or back line goes to. I think that the line for the front brakes go to the outlet on m/c closest to the firewall ? In the FAQ section this is asked but not answerd. THANKS AGIAN Mikie

Re: Another brake convertion ?

Which master cylinder are you using? The '67-'70 pickup master?

The m/c I got is for a 69 chevy 3/4 ton pu. mikie

Re: Another brake convertion ?

Then I believe the front master cylinder port is the front brakes, and the rear is the rear.

Re: Another brake convertion ?

Got the booster conversion done. I had the wrong fittings to adapt to the double m/c to brake lines so I tried the origanel single m/c and it works great. Will get the right fitting and put on double m/c as soon as I can [40 miles round trip to closest autoparts store]. thanks chevy fleetside for the heads up on the push rod. I had a b--ch of a time getting the bolt that goes from push rod to brake pedle back in until I called one of my daughters to help hold booster up. THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT GAVE GREAT ADDVICE MIKIE!
