keeping 3 on the tree

i am keeping the three on the tree and i was wondering what other motors besides my inline 6 will bolt to that tranny...

Any small block Chevy V8, GM V6 and may even work behind a Big block.

To keep the stock shift linkage you'll need a different Z-bar.

Yep, like Palf70Step says, they will all bolt up. Even to the BB. The bellcranks are different for the different motors though. WES

so i need a different bell housing and z bar...? how do i find out what z bar do i need?

i like the straight six but i also love the dual exhuast sound and i figure with a good 305 it would be better on gas mileage?

You can use the same bell housing . It looks like the Z-bar is different for 6 cyl. and small block . I found a listing in car shop truck shop catalog , but i am sure other vendors have them .

on my 74,000 mile 72 burb 3/4 ton 2wd with 307, 3 on the tree, 4.57 rear....

installing a 4.10 third member into the HO52
swapping in a 406sbc
adding the factory borg warner OD unit
putting in a McLeod ceramic clutch at engine swap

the rear gear swap will be done in the next few weeks along with royal purple gear oil, i drained and put in royal purple manual trans fluid in the saginaw and currently working on an 85 q-jet / edelbrock intake swap on the 307 so i can use the truck this summer for towing the family's 6000 pound '71 holiday trav'ler 23 footer that has been in the family almost since my dad got his first suburban (a 72 1/2 ton) in 1983. if this had been a floor shift truck, i would have ripped out the trans and put in an aftermarket modded late model 6 speed w/ a mechanical clutch conversion and features overdrive ratios in 5th and 6th gear with a lower first ratio than the saginaw. but i do like having a column shifter with a bench seat, but getting to drive a stick trans. just wish 3rd gear didn't come into play at 25mph!
