lost my keys..what to do...fast
 

Ok, my dad lost the keys to my ignition for my truck and I don't have a spare. What would be the best method of getting this thing back on the road? It is about 30 minutes away from home and I have to take care of it first thing in the morning.

Do I call a locksmith? Go buy another ignition assembly with key first thing in the morning? What is easiest and cheapest? Can I change out the ignition thingy easily and not at home because I don't know how to do this. Help me out quick guys.

Since the steering wheel dosent lock. Just run a temporary hot to the ignition and jump the starter and drive it home and replace the ignition later.

Do you have AAA or some kind of tow service? Removing the starter ignition without the key, is not all that easy. Remember, you need the key to turn it to acces. position first. Good luck

buy an ignition switch, unplug your wiring connector and plug the new switch in, use a pair of needle nose pliers to turn/start the truck and drive it home. From there you can take your old lock out and have a locksmith cut a new key for it. Or better yet just replace the lock cylinder along with the new ignition switch. I'd bet you would have a total of 30 bucks with both items.

Call the locksmith and let your dad pay the bill. After all he lost the keys. :D

But then his door keys wouldn't match his ign key.
If you have the $$, call a lock smith. That'll be the easiest and the quickest way to get it done and home.
Then you need to get a copy made. (not that I have room to talk about gettin copies made)

pull the plug off the ignition now stick a 3" wire in the the spot that the red wire is running to stick the other end in any of the other holes if the starter turns rember where that hole was and keep trying tell your heater runs leave that wire in the hole that makes your heater run then take one more wire red to the hole that made your starter turn and leave that one in just long enough for youe truck to start, now drive home

You don't need to buy a new ignition switch......

Just buy the cylinder.....or buy the door and ignition cyl set.....

That way you'll have locks that match when done.

The little hole in the ignition (assuming this is a 67-72 truck) is the removal tool. Simply use a paper clip in the little hole.......a no good key in the cylinder and while pushing in with the paper clip pull out on the lock with the key.

The key being the wrong one will pull on the tumblers inside and help with the removal.

Now with that out you could use a screwdriver to slip in the slot and start the vehicle.

Ignition and door keys the same? Not on mine. ITs a 67, did that come that way in 67?

I have a parts book that shows 67-72 door and ignition locks (replacement) with the same key....

Should have clarified that not all units were made with matching keys originally.

I know of one shop that sells the complete set with a glove box that also is keyed to the same.....

I don't know about factory, but it's no problem to get a matched set these days. I did it because mine were unmatched (they were matched originally but the ignition switch and cylinder got so worn it'd switch to off in a turn!) and because the door keys were so thin it wasn't even funny.

If I were you, I would replace them for safety issues. Someone somewhere has keys to your truck, and if you replace the ignition lock cylinder, they will no longer have keys to your truck. But also keep in mind that it will be a real pain to get that lock cylinder out of the ignition switch with out a key. Just some thoughts. Good luck
