Restoration questions

Alright i will start out with saying this is my first restoration and I'm 19. I have a 1972 chevy k20 350. i just want to see if anyone else has tackled these projects. i want to switch my th 350 over to the 700 r4, so can i reuse the stock crossmember or do i need to buy a certain one? also does anyone know where to find a column shifter that would have PRND321? or should i just go without first gear selection? thanks for any input.

Re: Restoration questions

You can use the same crossmember. You'll just have to move it back a bit and drill some holes in the frame to bolt it up. I just did this on my truck last night.

I've seen the shift indicators you are looking for (PRND321) at Jegs, check the below link.

ok thank you also how did the transmission fit after you switched over? is the any extra modification i will need to do? i heard you need to change the shifter linkage to make it work. is this hard to do?

Haven't gotten to the shifter linkage yet, but you will probably also have to shorten the drive shaft. I did anyway.

If you switch to a 2004R instead, you won't need to change driveshafts. The stock crossmember will need to be slid back a couple of inches.

trying to revive this thread again ha ha. but has anyone finished this restoration part yet. i have the 700 r4 ready to install and just wondering how hard it is to mess with the linkage to make it shift?

i did that swap in my 72 blazer.. tanny is 2 1/2 inches longer i believe and i ended up going with a b&m shifter. i just took the shifter off the column. but a year later and im putting in a flaming river tilt floor shift column.. well its ordered.. another week and it should be here.

Does a 700R4 require a trans cooler?
