My new custom kickpanel speakers
Read the 2 FAQ's said what the heck, it'll probably look better than anything I can buy for 80$. So about 50$ later I made my own kickpanel speaker boxes, and for a 16 year old who's never done any fiberglassing before I think they look good lol.
Used a piece of posterboard for the first mold, then once I got it the way I wanted, I traced it onto a piece of MDF. http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/2...0611215057.jpg http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/373...0611215118.jpg Then I cut my speaker mount ring. Then went and bought a dowel. http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/5...0611222703.jpg Then mounted the ring with hot glue and the angled dowel pieces I cut with the band saw. http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/9...0611225908.jpg http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/634/20100611225919.jpg Then wrapped it in a spare t-shirt my dad hopefully won't need anymore. http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/7...611232508e.jpg http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/1...0611232517.jpg Then I glassed the shirt with some Bondo Fiberglass resin, be sure to use the CORRECT amount of hardener, otherwise you end up with a very nice fiberglass ball to play with. I used about 3-4 coats of fiberglass, using fiberglass mat in one layer. Then smoothed it out, and used bondo to round out anything. http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9...0612104331.jpg Then we have the finished product wrapped in vinyl. http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/5...0612112000.jpg http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/7...0612112005.jpg http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/5...0612112012.jpg |

Got the pictures fixed.

Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Good job man I am going to be making me some here shortley. Looks easy enough, thanks for the pics! Did you buy the MDF and fiberglass at the hardware store? And did you just use a piece of plywood for the speaker holes?
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
I bought the fiberglass resin at Advance auto, looking back I see walmart has it $5 cheaper, it comes with hardner, but you'll probably wanna buy a little bit more just to have some extra. I had the MDF from an earlier project, but you can get a big sheet of it for like 8$ at lowes.

Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
And yeah I did use plywood for the speaker rings.
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
looks good man..
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
looks good, I know some guys use Fleece for the fabric then glass it... don't know if cotton reacts different
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
To me it seemed to work fine, sanded good etc.
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Kick panels looks sweet!
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Thanks, I'm working on a centerpiece to house my gauges & stereo.
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Those turned out great,
What is MDF? |
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Medium Density Fiberboard, its like particleboard on steroids.
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Wicked! I'm not feeling the folded vinyl, but even if it was cut there would still be a line. Guess there's no easy solution there.
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Yea I know what you mean but it looks like the seam will be against the carpet once mounted,
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
You can't even see the fold, and it looks better than a straight cut pieced together.
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
:wop:
Let's see them mounted up, |
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
May I refer you to the last post of this thread lol
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=1#post4101778 I did take a bunch of pics for a before and after, maybe I had them mounted up in those. Give me awhile. |
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
When I took the before afters I had already stripped the inside lol, sorry.
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
No problem,
I plan on making a pair of those and also do something similar to that to fill in my cab corners and mount 6x9's back there since I no longer have a fuel tank in the cab. |
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
You should try using an old gas tank stuff it with something and modify it to hold your amp, 2 6x9's and a sub lol
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
So what if your only 16...I think its cool you work for what you want. And you made it yourself. You should be proud of not only doing a great job on your speaks , but also doing a great job of persenting in here for others to learn.....Im motived to try it..Thanks Man

Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Good job!
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
like it, but I hope those speakers have grills and not just what is in the picture..
they are near your feet, and no matter how you try, dirt/sand etc will find their way into those, and kill the surrounds,, like the vinel covering, used sitting for trash pick up recliners or love seats, ect. are great cheap(read free) ways to get a big piece of that to have no seams.. nice tho.. |
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
Very nice! Looks clean!
|
Re: My new custom kickpanel speakers
awesome if your 16 and did it, im 18 and oughta be able to! Im going to try it in the near future, never worked with glass..
Thanks, now Imma check your build! |
