frame cracked..
Well, the other day my buddy was looking over my truck, turns out the frame is cracked about 5 inch's by the powersteering box:mad:, I would have never noticed it as it was behind the box. So time to tear it down... Plan is to strip it all and get it ready to have it repaired. I know a guy that has done many of these
This common on these trucks? Any of you had this happen? Any pictures of the repair? http://i445.photobucket.com/albums/q...y/DSC_0065.jpg |

I think it is common on these trucks

Re: frame cracked..
Very common on these trucks. Especially the 4x4 and trucks with wider tires. It's because the pitman arm is on the same side as the steering box and creates too much pressure on the frame near the steering box. If you wanna fix it right and not have to worry about it again, put the crossover steering from like a 91 suburban on it.

Very Common... even happened to my 2wd.

Re: frame cracked..
I had this happen on my '79 stepside 2wd. I just ground a grove along the crack with a carbide bit and welded a bead over it and ground it down. back in business, at least I hope

Re: frame cracked..
It's a common problem with these trucks. Autofab makes a gusset kit to reinforce the frame. Check it out.

Re: frame cracked..
jcwhitney sells a precut and drilled kit that welds back in over the crack.
Personally never had one break, but bought a truck that was 2wd with one already broke. I'd weld the crack up, plate it inside and out and weld the guts out of it all. |
