Sway bar help

I need a front sway bar for my 1967 C10. Didn't come with one from the factory. I have a local pull it yard an they have some 73-87 chevy trucks c10-c30's. Was wondering if they would work on my truck. If so, what kind of modifications will I have to do. Thanks

hey hoss. dont know how much work it going to be but i did do some reserch for you. i looked up both swaybars in LMC and the one for the 67-72 has the same part number as the 73-86. there is also a performance swaybar kit(complete) in there and they are both the same.

part # 34-0162 swaybar
part # 34-2510 performance swaybar kit

hope that helps ya. at least you know they are the same.

by the way

I did stay at a Holliday Inn Express last night

had to throw that in

Re: Sway bar help

if you can get a sway bar from a 2wd dually up to 1992 or even a 3/4 ton van

they are 1 1/4 inch and work damn good,

buy the right bushings and your done

BTW, are you running lowering springs or are you at stock hieght

Re: Sway bar help

It will work, but you'll need the mounting brackets that are riveted to the frame, if yours didn't come with them. You'll need to have tools to drill out or cut off the rivets to get the brackets.

I just bought a pair of brackets from a member here, and got my bar off a 1980 truck from the pick-n-pull

As far as modifications, I had to remove 2 rivets from the very front cross-member to mount the brackets - all the holes are there.

There's a great write-up in this faq: Swaybar Install FAQ With Pictures

BTW marks1972 Harrisville is 2 1/2 hours north of you up Hwy. 49.

Re: Sway bar help

67 - 87 chevy or GMC trucks sway bars will work. The pain is having to chisel or drill out the rivets for the frame mount brackects. (or you can buy new ones from EarlyClassic)
Look for 3/4 or 1 tons for thicker sway bar. Your lower A-Arms will already have the needed bolt holes for the bracket at the end of the bars.

Check the parts board, I just bought 1 from blue_69 for 20.00 bucks plus ride.

Re: Sway bar help

the LMC truck bar is only 1-1/8" diameter, so you pay more for less. I'd have gone this route last year instead of buying my sway bar from CPP which is 1-1/4 and bolts in but uses end links which get close to hitting the tie-rod adjusters.

Re: Sway bar help

I think I might have found one off of a 72 said it was an 1 1/8 diameter an comes with all the hardware doesn't want too much for it. Probably the route I will go. I appreciate all the replies on this matter.

Re: Sway bar help

how much diff. will the larger diameter bar have (handling) I added a 1 1/8 bar and was quite happy!

Re: Sway bar help

I realy liked the 1 1/4 bar,

As far as the frame brackets, if you have lowered or cut coils just mount the sway bar right to the frame.

the angle of the control arms make this possible

I just mounted mine tonight and didn't grab the frame brackets from the donor truck, an 85 1/2 ton 2wd. I had to drill the holes for the frame bushings but the control arms already had the holes. However, mounting it to the frame, I rub my pitman and idler arms when turning and slightly on straight ahead so i am going to get some new frame brackets from work (I work for a GMC dealer), so the bar will sit lower and clear the steering linkage. I definitely feel the difference in the way it rides and turns as it is though. Why didn't I do this 2 years ago???

Re: Sway bar help

the frame brackets hang down too much for me,

maybe shim them 1/4 or so???? just a question

Re: Sway bar help

I put a 1 1/4 inch bar from a wrecked 80's Camper Special truck with new polyurathane bushing and the special brackets for lowered trucks from ECE on my long box big block truck about 5 years ago and IMHO its the best value handling upgrade you can do to one of our trucks. If you have been driving your truck for while you will notice the difference in the first mile of driving after the install. One tip, I'd spring for new bushings.

Thinking I am going to try to shim them since the new brackets are $27 each and I just can't justify that kind of money. I could probably get them from a junk yard but, as already said, they are riveted and would be a bit of trouble getting them off. I do agree that they do hang down fairly low with all the factory brackets, so shimming is the plan.

Re: Sway bar help

the rivets aren't too tuff if you use a large chisel and a large hammer.

Make an "X" on the head of the rivet with a cutoff wheel. Then use an air chisel to pop them off. I got it down to about 20 secs each.

Re: Sway bar help

Just grind them down and pop them out with a hammer. It's a piece of cake.
