Disc Brake questions
Guys I have a couple of questions in regards to disc brake conversions. Today me and my dad picked up a complete 5 lug disc brake off a 71 truck.
- My question I believe the guy said it came off a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck , BUT its a 5 lug , arent all 5 lug disc brakes from 71-72 off 1/2 ton trucks ? If it did come out of a 3/4 or 1 ton will it fit my C10 ? - It came with everything needed minus the master cyclinder. What other parts will I need to properly install these on my 68 C/10 , to convert from 6 lug drum , to 5 lug disc. Will I only need the tie rod ends ? If so can anybody direct me in the right location wehter it be from classic industries or autozone/kragen ? Much appreciated ! |
Re: Disc Brake questions
you will need new proportioning valve for a disc/drum system

Re: Disc Brake questions
Another question. Can I use the same Brake Booster and just change out the master cylinder / proportioning valve ?
Also when buying tie rods, so i buy both the inner tie rod and outer, or only the outer tie rod ? |
Re: Disc Brake questions
Found this great write up
http://www.customclassictrucks.com/t...all_joint.html has everything pretty much step by step. I still have a few questions though. As far as the tie rods go , do i only have to replace the outer tie rods that go attached to the spindle or both of them ? Also I only change the upper ball joint or do I need to replace the bottom one as well ? |
Re: Disc Brake questions
I gather, your 68 C/10 has 6 lug drums all the way around. I have a 69' Step Side and it had 6 lug Drums and I converted to a 5 lug setup from a 71. There was a power brake booster in the truck already. I used that and it works just fine. As far as other stuff to make the change over, Cdowns has already mentioned the proportioning valve and yes the Master Cylinder. You also mentioned you were going to get tie rods. It's real simple, if your going to convert your front end to the 71 5 lug/disk brakes, buy the parts as if you were buying them for the 71. So when going to Autozone/Napa (I went to Advanced Auto) Tell them you need parts for a 71 not a 68. I ordered both new inner and outer tie rods and ball joints.
ALSO.........If there is a drag link on that 71 setup, TAKE IT because the taper on the 71 is different than the 67-70. P.S. Your Brake Line routing will also change With the right parts, it was a very smooth and easy change over we did it in a weekend |

Re: Disc Brake questions
i would buy lower and upper balljoints. you might as well do it right now, versus tearing it back down later.... if you can get MOOG brand parts get em......

Re: Disc Brake questions
How about that drag link? Are you able to get that from that 71 setup?
|
Re: Disc Brake questions
Thanks guys im definately going to go ahead and replace upper and lower. Another question. by drag link is that like the front swaybar ? If so i do not have that part. That is what attaches to the inner tie rods ?
|
Re: Disc Brake questions
yep, that's what i'm talking about. like I said in my earlier post, the taper is different between the early and later years. your in so cal, there should be plenty of places to pick on up at. i got mine from a u pull it yard for $5.00

Re: Disc Brake questions
Yeah I did not know i need a new sway bar. I just got off the phone with auzotone and they have all the parts, inner outter tie rods , upper / lower ball joints. Should be aroun $120 or so.
So there is no way i hell that the inner tie rod will connect with the sway bar that is on the truck now ? Damn i gotta start calling people , LOL. |
Re: Disc Brake questions
Sway bar and Center link are different.Make sure you use the term center link or you will be looking at the wrong part. The sway bar is kind of a wide U shape. The center link will be straighter.

Re: Disc Brake questions
I'm thinking. If I only replace the outer tie rods, then I can leave the center link and inner tie rod alone right ? I will only change the outer tie rods , and upper/ lower ball joints.

Re: Disc Brake questions
Frijolito - PanelDeland is right, the sway bar and center link are 2 different things. I referred to the drag link (also known as the center link - sorry if I confused you at all) Anyways, I think your best bet is to try and locate a center link and to buy new inners. I realize that this may set you back in getting your truck back together but in the long run, you'll have new steering parts. I was lucky enough to locate one in the u pull it yard. there are members always selling parts in the for sale section and I'm sure you can get a center link there. Become a Subscribed Member, It'll be the best $25.00 you spend all year.

Re: Disc Brake questions
thanks for all the input guys, We have the disc installed minus the
-drag link -Inner tie rod -Tie rod adjusting sleve now my Autozone has the inner tie rod and adjustable sleve , Does anybody carry the drag link new? I looked thru classic industries , brothers and truck shop magazine and nothing. I see they carry them for other years. Anybody know where i can find a new one ? I see they are under $40 for other years so if i can find a new one for that price id just perfer to get a new one. Or if anybody has a lead in a used one on a forum and is willing to ship , let me know! , Thanks guys. |
Re: Disc Brake questions
I recently put front disk brakes in my 69 pickup from a 71 truck. you will need to change the upper and lower ball joints to 71-72 and tie rods inner , outer and sleve. I would recommend going to cpp and buying the parts from them I found them very helpfull. I would also recommend buying front brake lines for a 71 that are formed for the truck and brake hoses. joe 1-718-634-1268

Re: Disc Brake questions
So guys I purchased the master cylinder from Autozone,
As far as the proportioning valve goes, I think classic industries wants $150+ for one. Am I looking at the wrong part ? Where would be the cheapest way to find one ? Also as far as the brake lines go . I only need the front lines that go from the proportioning valve to the brakes ? Can i re use the steel lines but I need to change the flexible ones ? help is greatly appreciated , thanks. |
