3spd same as auto?

Is automatic linkage the same as 3spd.on column?

My lower front linkage for my 3spd on the column is cobbled I think. The rod slides up and down in that pipe thing with the hole in it..

Can I take the parts I need off of an automatic truck? Will it be the same? Or do I have to get em off of a 3spd manual...thanks, check my build thread for pic of what ive got (bolt 2 washers and funnny pipe thing with hole, thank you)

Build thread is too long to locate what you have but I used the column off an automatic to convert my 69. It's a lot easier and that way you can take all of the linkage involved not just the column.

re. making yours work. I'm not sure if you can make the 3 speed manual column work or convert it to automatic without a lot of hassle.

no you need a manual column for a manual transmission

No no no not the actual column, the arm that holds up the linkage, my linkage bar falls off, and I cant shift R N 1

I dont need the column, I need some of the hardware for the shift ears that hold up the rod...I need to know if 3spd manual hardware parts are the same as auto..I think the bushings are the same...so would the rest be the same?

From what I've seen the parts I think you are referring to are the same. The auto and manual columns use the same upper & lower bushing 67-70 the ones I have messed with. Make sure you have the metal spacer tube that goes through the bushings. Without it when you tighten the bolt that adjusts the rod it will lock the rod to the arm and not swivel like it should.

Here is a pic of mine on a 70 truck column. It does not have the rubber bushing

its a busy weekend but i'll get some pics of mine....

I think im missing the metal sleeve that goes thru the rubber bushing, and I cant tigthen the arm up (just slides when i try to shift.)

So the parts are the same (hardware bushings for top linkage on column) NOT lower parts on trans

Here is a pic of my friend's 3 on the tree linkage:
http://wkinsler.com/truck/manual_linkage.jpg

The part that pinches the rod and allows it to swivel is the same as the auto. It uses the same rubber bushings, and the trans. end uses the same hard plastic bushing with a shoulder, just like the auto uses. Other than that, nothing else interchanges. We replaced the plastic bushings at the trans end with one made from brass tubing on both trucks, and I found a place that sells repro rubber bushings for the upper end, but had to reuse the insert tube, because the one that comes with the repro is too small. It tightened up the shifter, but it stayed that way for only about a year. It is sloppy again, and I'm planning on making a bushing out of brass or bronze.

I just threw all these parts in the dumpster after converting mine to auto. I would have sent you all of my linkages for free if I would have known

I honestly don't remember, but I want to say that the collar goes against the trans lever, because it seemed it was opposite the way it was on the auto.

I hope that helps you.

Ok heres some of the hardware for the front (lower) shifter on the column

the middle 2 come from a stock 67 plain jane gmc

the outer pieces came off my 68 which is jiger riged to heck lol

Do the outer pieces go on my truck or are they off something different? I may go back and get everything off the 67 gmc to less complicate the situation..thanks
