Removing Cab Trim
 

Hey guys can someone tell me how to remove the cab trim that wraps the back of the cab on a 1986 Short bed? It is the trim that is under the rear window. Thanks for the help!

The corner pieces have a bolt that goes through the cab corner, with a speed nut on the back side. You can access it from inside the cab, reach your hand up above where your factory speaker is (or should be) and you'll feel it. The band across the back is held on with pressure clips, with a corner piece removed you can slide it off of the clips.

You have to get the corner peices off first. To get them off you have to reach up inside the back corner off the cab from the inside. Behind the speaker grilles. There is a nut back there that holds them on. Once you get a side off the back pice just slides off from the side.

Has a picture if it helps you any with those clips. If you want to pop it off instead of sliding it, you press down on the top of the molding and get it to snap off the bottom of the clip, then raise it up and you're free and clear. Some of the retainer clips will probably sacrifice their lives in the process though. :lol:

Something a friend of mine did when putting that back on, he put a little silicone just around the edges, and I've seen this on several trucks, to help keep it from rusting and vibrating, causing the paint to have streak marks, if you know what i'm talking about.? I guess what I'm trying to say is theres a little opening with those and water and trash can get in those and make the back of your cab look awful.

I just mounted the cab trim on my truck, not that long ago.. (it never had it from the factory),... your saying it's NOT good to add silicone?... that it causes the paint to streak and rust?

No, I'm saying add it to keep trash from getting behind that piece and causing streaks in the back of your cab. And I'm talking over a period of time. I wish GM would've come up with some kind of rubber molding, kinda like they do on the towing mirrors, the piece of plastic under the crome. It helps keep from rubbing against the doors. Now you understand what I'm saying?

Ok..lol, now I get it. Hmm, might have to think about trying that,.. actually plan to get the truck painted anyway.. sometime in the future.. might do it then.
