I'm thinking my '68 K-10 is a true Frankenstein !
...I'm reading bits of information here and there, trying to figure out which part will work for what....truck is supposed to be a '68 K-10.
But after reading some history , little things dont add up. My truck is supposed to be a 6cyl (now a v-8) with 4spd base model. But the cab is a factory A/C cab (has the box and left overs still intact) and the interior parts are wrong for '68. The glove box door says Cheyanne Super (could have been swapped easy enough), but the E-brake is the foot pedal type and looks like it has been there since day 1. Weren't all 67-68 models the Hand Brake style ? What other little things will help me figure this out? Kinda important on stuff like buying all ne E-Brake cables and parts.....gotta get the right year stuff ! |

It could go deeper than that... If the cab was replaced you would need the primary cable for the cab series, the secondary cable and frame guides for the frame series and the rear cables for the rear axle you have. I have found the easiest way is to remove the pats and measure them. or take them with to the parts store. NAPA had, or could order the stuff I needed for my K-10. As far as other stuff a lot of it will interchange but the best thing to do is to ask here if you can't figure it out... LockDoc |
Re: I'm thinking my '68 K-10 is a true Frankenstein !
......uhm....yeah....well.....the only parts left on the truck is the primary from the pedal. Guess thats a start ! At least it appears to be in good working order.
Is it possible to back date a newer cab with the hand grab E-brake? I would hope that they would just swap right out and nothing in the kick panel or firewall would be different. I don't know these well enough to know. TIA ....Steve |

I can't tell you that either. I've never tried to swap them out. I'm sure the hole in the firewall would be in a different position. Maybe someone that's tried it will chime in... LockDoc |
Re: I'm thinking my '68 K-10 is a true Frankenstein !
....it's definately a 69-72 cab as it also has the Cargo light above the rear window. From what I've read , that wasn't available until '69.

Re: I'm thinking my '68 K-10 is a true Frankenstein !
You can back date to a point. 69 cab will have 2 vin plates (same size as 67-68), 70 will have one large vin plate, 71 cab will have a raised pad to mount mirror on the interior roof and a pressure relief vent in the driver's door "b" pillar. The 72 cab will have no raised pad (mirror was mounted on windshield) and will have the b pillar vent. Hope this helps.

71super, good tips...
The firewalls are slightly different and the fusebox is different as well. Does it have power steering? If it does and the frame wasn't modified then you have a newer truck. Take a picture looking down onto the power steering box. any pics would help... I have an original 68 K-10 short bed so I should be able to reference most of what you are looking for. |
