Dually drop questions
 

After doing (quite) a bit of research, it looks like a 1/2 ton swap into my dually is going to be a considerable PITA. I started looking at pictures of lowered Duallies and they look good, but I have a few questions. Since I really have my heart set on having a CCSB 1/2 ton, that is the way I am still leaning. But....

-What kind of drop could I expect by doing a flip in the rear, and spindles and cutting the springs in the front?

-Will it stil be able to haul like stock, or at least a loaded car trailer?

-Is there actually room to do a flip and keep most of the springs? I don't think mine is already lowered at all, but the bump stops are lower than the top of the springs.

I have access to a SWB frame along with all of the 1/2 ton suspension, and already have a clean short bed. Would I be time and trouble ahead to just cut the rear of the SWB frame, and graft it onto the rear of the 1 ton frame I have now?

it is entirely possible I am overthinking things, but I am trying to keep downtime to a minimum. Any help, insight, or advise is appreciated. :metal:

it would need a c-notch in the back with the flip then you could hall anything like stock

Treat the dually just like the previous 1/2 ton. Spindles & trimmed front coils; flip kit w/a c-notch in the rear.

Disclaimer: It's still going to ride like a 1-ton dually. Ride tech's rear dually 'air bar' set-up is an excellent investment here. Full capacity w/the ride of a 1/2 ton.

I figured it might still ride like that. Consensus around our house is that it should have 2 rear wheels, not 4. I think I was losing sight of what I really want, thinking it would be a lot easier. I still want a 1/2 ton CCSB.

I was under it looking at the difference in the spring height, and the shocks. Id doesn't look like there is any clearance at all to do a flip kit.

Maybe build the compromise?? Check out Hills Hauler (Hills Hot Rod shop) or the CCSB build that cochino sold to ?? (drawing a blank @ the moment). Both trucks are CCSB 3/4 ton & look nice......

Sidewalls on the tires have as much to do with ride as anything. Since I don't pull a 5th wheel or very heavy bumper hitch, I've gotten away from the 10-ply tires and started using LT highway tires. Made more difference than anything else I've tried.

some days i wish my truck was still 8 lug, but the 8 lug suspension stuff is super heavy and I love the way my truck rides

It looks like everything is different from single wheel to dual wheel anyhow, so it would still need to be switched out. That, and we have a 1/2 ton parts truck. I was planning on new bushings and all anyhow.

Another concern about staying 1 ton or 3/4 ton is availability of wheels. The one tons have a decent selection if you want to convert to 22's but the price goes way up. The 3/4 tons are pretty limited. Adam spent forever trying to find a wheel he liked.

I vote for you to do a 4/6 drop with spindles and springs up front and shackles and pull a couple of leafs out back. Keep it a dually and chop up a single wheel 3/4 ton for the wife!

You'll be hard pressed to find another dually this nice once you decide you really want a dually (because they're so badass). Great looking truck as it sits, by the way.

Doesnt your 1 ton ride great? My dually rides better than my 03' 3/4hd. Keep it a dually, if you really want to tinker make it a short bed.

Adam, do you think a 700 is going to hold up in your truck? I keep hearing that it won't, but the step up to a 4L80E is pretty steep!

Jon I think it would look killer with a nice drop and some some Eagle dually wheels instead of the more expensive Alcoa's with the 10 lug i believe. Also I am going to get the Torque Thrusts tomorrow and I will get them to you either tomorrow or Sunday. Sorry about that bro. If you really want the ccsb, then i will keep my eyes open for you; do a google images search for chevy dually on 20 inch wheels or something like that and see what images come up. I am about to see what I can find that I think you might like.

my vote is to go ccsb. Just because i need some motivation to get my done. I also started with a dually you can switch all the suspension in a weekend with a buddies help.

Triveno, I am moving this weekend. I will be back at work Tuesday. No rush. I am starting to lean toards keeping my truck whole, but I think our '87 SWB truck that was going to get parted may get a new lease on life.
