4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
Okay I have a 1967 Chevy Suburban with a BoP TH 400 tranny and the transferr case has a silver tag on it.
My guess is a 205 or NP 205. Here is what it has on it: 71 41 CTC 9 13 71 205 Let me know what I have please. Thanks folks! |
Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
I would guess it is a 205.

Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
What does the NP suppose to mean on these things?
Anyone know that much? |
Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
NP= New Process, as in the company that manufactured these transfer cases- New Process Gear.
Take a picture of it, or even just the case itself. It should read like the following: model X XXX ratio xxx serial x x xx Assem. no xxxxxxxxx |

Still in the process of cleaning her up. on the heavy part of the case is has C-99404 and on a very small tag has 7-20-71, which I am guessing is when it was made. More later once I get that heavy thing cleaned up. Thanks guys for all your help. |
Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
I know C-99404 is stamped into the cases, but do not know exactly what it means.

Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
Want to put in new gaskets and seals while it is apart, how easy is this?
|
Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
I have never done it, from what I can see, it's pretty straight forward. Check the gear oil when you drain it for metal shavings, check all the gears, and then replace anything that needs replaced including the seals. Fill it back up with the proper oil. I always use stuff from royal purple (big $ but worth it IMO)

Also do a google search, both Web and Images for NP 205 and NP 205 rebuild kits. |
Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
Only thing I came up with is from Monster Transmission and just the gasket set is $70!
Rebuild is something like in the mid $200 or so which seems fair. Might as well just have my tranny guy go thru it and make sure it's okay before proceeding. |
Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
I suggested google images so you can see pictures of the NP205 and make sure thats what you have, the NP203 looks a bit different.
Parts can be a bit expensive, you can allways start with a napa store too. but heres another link. http://quad4x4.com/New_Process_NP205_Parts.html |

http://www.northwestfab.com/rebuild.html OP, in your identification, look between the rear output and the front shaft's rear bearing retainer. If there is a little 3-bolt cover between them, it is a 205. If not, it is a boat anchor. |

Re: 4x4 newbie needs help on ID plz
I had my NP208 rebuilt at a local shop in April.
New seals, bearings and chain. And of corse labour. 900 beans later. :( Reman case is 1200 + tax. (after core return) When I blew the 4spd in my truck I drained the tcase fluid for removal and it looked like pink metal flake paint. Chalk full of partical goodness. /sigh |
