Shifter detent function

I've acquired a rebuilt tilt column and I just installed the shifter arm. I tried running it though the gears on my work bench, imagining it linked to a transmission.
I functions correctly in that you have to pull the spring loaded arm towards you to allow a shift out of park but then it just glides through the rest of the movement.
I haven't shifted a GMC in 7 years, does the only indexing on the column shift from park to reverse?

Thanks guys.

The detents are in the transmission.

I had the same question when I went to a tilt. Seemed to not have that hard click- click like the fixed column. But it shifts with a detent type action , just not as pronounced.

Re: Shifter detent function

To clarify, the shift column requires the shifter be pulled towards you to shift out of park, not the transmission. This is to prevent a accidental shift from park into reverse. I'm going to assume there is no further indexing in the shift column and it's ready for install.
Cheers

the tilt does have a detent plate. Kind of hard to see detent notches in the pic. Its the plate with two screws.
