Help - 454 mounts, power steering, disc brakes, emergency brakes

1 Attachment(s)
1. I recently purchased a 1965 Chevy C10 Pick-Up. It’s a SWB. It came with a BBC 454 and a 4-speed Muncie (I think it’s a Muncie). It was originally a 6cyl. with a 3 on the tree.
The engine and tranny conversion was not done real well. The motor mounts and clutch linkage leave a lot to be desired. The rear tranny mount is ok.
I NEED,
Correct motor mount perches for the big block.
Correct motor mounts for the big block.
Correct clutch components from the pedal to the throwout arm.

2. All emergency brake mounting hardware is missing. By this I mean, the rods and connecting mounts etc. under the truck that join the 3 cables DOES ANYBODY HAVE THIS STUF??. I have the 3 cables and the handle inside is ok.

3. I want to add power steering and front power disc. brakes.
What is the best way to do this for a reasonable budget number?

I'd sure appreciate any help anybody can give me here.
THANKS

Looks like a nice body on that truck. Any engine pics? Here are the mounts I am using.

Here's the only engine pic I have. Yes it's pretty clean but the paint needs attention. Trying to get all the mechanical problems fixed first. Where'd you get the mounts?
Thanks

For the motor mounts, there are a few different ways to go since these trucks didn't originally come with big blocks. If you can post a pic of the ones you have then we will know which direction to point you. The fact that your truck has a manual trans will dictate some of what can be done.

As for the clutch linkage itseld, a pic of that will help also. There again, these trucks didn't come with big blocks, so the original components may not work. Fabrication may be necessary.

Since your truck has a rear trans mount you will have to either fabricate your e-brake levers and mounts on that crossmember or convert to the '66-'72 e-brake cable system. That setup doesn't use a crossmember for the e-brake, just cables and a couple rods.

Take a look here for ideas on putting disc brakes on the front of your truck.

Some guys prefer to go with all aftermarket parts, but that isn't necessary. Although there becomes a point where if you want dropped spindles and springs, purchasing a used OEM front suspension is pointless except for some cores when needed. Then again if you need the steering, and possibly other parts, a complete '71-'87 parts truck isn't a bad idea.

I have the power steering box mounting plates when you get to where you need one. There are links to all of my products below in my sig \/ \/ \/

http://www.truckandcarshop.com/trucks60_72/t60_097.html Bottom of the page. Alot of guys use the later model stock mounts. I didn't want to use them only becuase they looked ugly to me and is pretty much the only reason. I tried the 67-72 BB mounts and could not get them to line up right. These were my last option. Should have been my first.

CAPTAIN FAB, The mounts I have are the originals, all cut up and scabbed on to. I think I'm going to use the ones CHEVY FLEETSIDE did.

My E-brake - Do you have pics of the 66-72 setup?

I'll try to get a pic of my current "fabricated" cutch set up. It works fine but is a bit scary looking. What do ya think of an hydraulic clutch?

Front disc. brakes & power steering - I want to maintain stock height. I just want to be clear here. If I get CONTROL ARMS, SPINDLES, POWER STEERING BOX & PUMP OFF A 73-87. It'll all just bolt to my frame with the help of your PS box renforcement plate?
Thanks for the help.

FLEETSIDE - Thanks for the help on the mounts

Almost. You have to drill a few holes, but it's a bolt in setup minus the routing of lines and whatnot.

if you look at my picture you will see I had to trim the frame to use those mounts.

ChevyFleetsideWhy do they have to be trimmed? Are they for SBC?
Do "the later model stock mounts" mounts bolt right in?

JIMMYDEAN Are the holes that need to be drilled for the sterring box?

I used stock 71 towers on my 66 with 454, very slight frame trimming, maybe 1/8" was necessary to line up holes for the motor mounts (basically, they had to spread out toward the wheels a bit); the trimming's not noticeable once the towers are in place.

porky, if your worried about originality, stop, V8 BB's were not factory in any c10 till 68 ( I think).

The POL tubular mounts work famously for BB, SBC or LSx engine installs. Yes you will need to trim the top of the fram rail about 1" or so. The 68-72 truck have this already done because they had BB's.

I went with the 66 ebrake set up on my 65, if you just order everything you need, DO NOT GET A NEW FRONT CABLE, use your old one unless it is real bad, buy a good used one. The ones that are made now are aluminum and the original one is made of steel, trust me, I know.

The holes needed to be drilled are for the mount/steering box. once you get the bracket, you will understand.

I hope this helps.

Let us know if you need anything else.

Clyde65 No not worried about originality at all, do like the stock look outside though.

Where do I get all the ebrake stuff?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Help - 454 mounts, power steering, disc brakes, emergency brakes

You have to trim the frame rails so the mounts will sit flush. You have to do the same with the 73 and up mounts also.

here are some engine pics of my 1/2 a---- mounts that came with my truck. My engine seems to sit lower in the cradle than yours?

those are butchered stock mounts. You might be able to see it here. Just look at the top of the frame. That is what that mount used to look like.

Re: Help - 454 mounts, power steering, disc brakes, emergency brakes

What mounts to use is up to you. It depends on what you're after. I prefer the '73 and up mounts as they are an better design IMO. Yes some guys think they are ugly, but I don't think so. I would rather not to be worrying about my motor mounts coming apart.

Sorry but no I don't have any pics of the e-brake cable assembly. LMC usually has some pretty good pics on their website.

Going with a hydraulic clutch would be an easy way to solve the clutch linkage issue. You could use the assembly that I sell for the '60-'62's.

Using the '73-'87 front suspension and brake components is pretty straight forward. But anytime you're modifying a vehicle, there are times you will have to cut, drill, weld, etc. to make things work. My power steering box adapter plate will require drilling of holes, and I do recommend stitch welding it to the frame for additional rigidity. Although it isn't absolutely necessary.

They are only attached by the one bolt under the engine. The scabbed on piece just rest against the frame rail, SCARY!

On my 65 I am using late model mounts.I have a 402/t350 in mine.I trimmed the frame slightly to make them work.I put a 78 front under mine with a capt fab p/s adapter.Worked great! You will have to drill some holes to make the front end swap work.I am using the 66 style e-brake set up.Good luck with your truck.

Re: Help - 454 mounts, power steering, disc brakes, emergency brakes

I used the POL engine mounts ( just like Chevy Fleetside)and had to clearance about 3/4" of the top frame rail right at the mounting holes. you can purchase the motor mounts for the BB with the bolt that holds them from POL I believe. I also purchased all my ebrake stuff from LMC and ended up sending the new front cable back because when you install it in the factory mount under the column, it has a bracket that you slide the cable through that holds the housing while you pull the lever which pulls the cable, the aluminum would crush and slip out of the bracket.
